View Full Version : Currency problems in Mexico city

I recently travelled from Puerto Vallarta to Mexico City and found that
nowhere would except money (bills) with even the slightest tear in it. I
had one 200 peso note with a tear which I measured at 3 millimetres long and
could not spend it anywhere.

I did not find the same problem anywhere else in Mexico.

Has anyone else had this experience?

In many countries. You have to bring it to the bank, or spend it at
someplace upscale (fancy restaurant) or international (McDonalds). Or play
the game along with everyone else - keep trying to pass it off until you get
some sucker to take it. Works better when you already have the goods in your
hand first.

mexicans dont trust money thats been mutilated in any way, whether its
a tear or ink stamping of some kind or mindless scribbling with a
biro.
its also a kind of macho thing, everybody is afraid of being made a
fool of even though most ppl DO know that any damaged bill can be
exchanged at the bank.
notice the shifty eyes...

The banks might be the place to change a bill with a tear. However I've never
had any luck getting them to accept one.

Over the past 4-5 years tried 3 times, no success.

Passed 2 on, changed one returning at the border.
Thanks much
