I just read on www.cruisecritic.com that RCI has ordered the first ultra
Voyager class ship which is to be delivered May 2006. They also decided to
drop the options to build anymore Radiance class ships after the Jewel of
the Sea.

What's the differences between the Voyager class & ultra Voyager?

160,000 tons vs. 140,000, 3600 passengers vs. 3100, 18 decks vs. 15.
Knowing RCL, I imagine they will put some creative new public spaces
in part of the added tonnage -- I'd be disappointed if it was just the
"Voyager only bigger".

Within hours of Royal's announcement, Malaysia-based Star Cruises put out
its own news, saying it would order a pair of 2,400-passenger ships for its
Miami subsidiary, Norwegian Cruise Line, for a total cost of $790 million.
<snip>
One trigger for Friday's flurry of activity was the expiration of an option
Royal Caribbean held at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany for two smaller
ships.
By building one larger ship instead of two smaller ones, Royal Caribbean may
also save money. Its options were for an "aggregate contract price" of $800
million, according to a filing with regulators.
But its decision opened the door for Norwegian, which opportunistically
swooped in to take the shipyard slots for 2005 and 2006 that were reserved
for Royal Caribbean if it had exercised its options. The ships will be about
93,000 tons -- a tad bigger than Norwegian's newest ship, Norwegian Dawn.
The new ships will likely be based in North America, in keeping with
Norwegian's emphasis the domestic market adopted after 2001. "Our ambition
is to bring a modern cruise ship to every major coastal population center in
North America," Veitch said.

I DON'T think they are intended to be bigger than Voyager ships.
I think they ARE intended to be bigger than Mickey's big ship (QM2).
Ricky doesn't want Mickey to have the "biggest" one.

Yeah. I love big ships because they have wonderful facilities, but I do
wish they'd start having taxi service on board so I could get from one
end to the other.

I think they are too big. Even the Sun Princess is too big. The HAL
Statendam class ships are about as big as I want a ship to be.
Am I the only one who misses the intimacy of ships with fewer than 1000
passengers? Obviously there are not many of us or ships would be built to
cater to us.

During our short years of cruising we've gone from sizes of around 35 K tons
to 135K tons. We seem to be happy with the ships of 70K tons (Legend of the
sea)- It's got everything I need without the crowding & they seem to do a
better job for their size. The way things are going the 70 K ton size might
be around for a few more years.

Kinda reminds me of Stan Freberg's "Incident at Los Veroces".

Actually, I do miss those smaller ships. It was lovely when everyone
began to look familiar after 2 or 3 days.

Odysseus,
There are many things that are too big. Personal vehicles, because many
aren't cars these days, now, are too big. The portions we get in most
restaurants are way too big. Supersizing has been around for a while now
and we are deluded into thinking that medium is small, large is medium,
very large is large, and then way too large is very large.
A 70,000 ton ship is my idea of a megaship. I see no use for an ultra
Voyager class ship, except for making tons of money. I think it is a
commentary on mine is bigger than yours, and I think it is silly. Others
may disagree but is my opinion on this bigger and bigger direction that
seems part of American culture (I remember in elementary school a French
teacher, from France, commenting on how big things are in the U.S.--that
was over 30 years ago).
The Voyager class ships are fine, but there's plenty of them. I think
the whole cruise fleet size is too big and nothing new is being offered.
What would be new are more ships from different small lines featuring
alternatives, not everything under the sun in one ultra-sized ship.

And many, if not most, of the people who eat those big portions are also too big.
