Just returned from a quick trip to LA for a funeral. Alaska now flies
into Long Beach Airport, and we found it to be a really convenient
alternative for trips to SoCal. JetBlue uses it too. It's really
small, and looks like California in the 50's with its whitewashed
buildings and palm trees. Easy access to the 405, too.
The night before catching an early flight home (to Seattle) we stayed at
a Guest House Suites (3-star AAA) on East PCH. $63 with one of those
coupons you can get at Denny's. It was about 10 minutes from the
airport. A nice place, well located and with a great "expanded"
continental breakfast too. Love those waffles!!

Depending where in SoCal you're going, Santa Ana and Ontario airports can
also be very nice ways of avoiding LAX.

For surfing Web info "John Wayne Airport" is the official name for the
airport in Santa Ana.

And, as long as we're talking about alternative airports to Los
Angeles, there's also Burbank/Bob Hope/BUR airport. There's a
Metrolink/AMTRAK stop within walking distance, so if you're coming or
going during a weekday, it's hard to get more convenient than that.
