But a held GPS doesnt have the full US road system on it and give you full
route directions does it ? as in if i want to go to place X i enter it in
and it speaks the directions at every road turn, junction etc

Just checked the site out again... seems the latest versions of Tom Tom
will be coming with Canadian maps ; ) I know this is sort of OT for this
thread, but I've been wanting to get a Tom Tom for a while!

The base map on my Magellan is pretty damn good (all major roads in US/CAN)
The Software I have allows me to upload very large rectangular detailed
regions (Currently most of Vancouver Island across to the Alberta/BC border
in the top corners and Olympia to Spokane, Washington in the lower corners.
This allows turn by turn mapping on from the GPS to and from any point in
the loaded region and you can upload turn by turn maps from the PC software
to or from points not in the loaded region.
I especially like the ability to type in an address on the handheld and have
it map out a damn close destination (there is a margin of error based due to
averaging being used along the streets to pinpoint individual street
addresses). The last time I used the GPS to find a retail store, it was out
by two buildings.
I can't wait for my next long distance road trip coming up this year!

If you are hiring a car, all of the major car rental agencies offer
satellite navigation as an option.
