Strange you should mention Adams. Saw "Doctor Atomic" Thursday:

SMART MEN WITH GUTS

"Good night, and good luck."
I've often said that, excluding my parents, no person has had more
influence over who and what I am today than Senator Joseph McCarthy.
'Though but a child, he absolutely terrified me.*

This excellent film about Edward R. Murrow, the Columbia Broadcasting
System, and Joseph McCarthy is a trip down memory lane for those of us
who lived through it and felt the fear of full-blown McCarthyism. To us
it's not merely a term but an experience.

Much in the film is familiar to the grey-hair'd audience with which I
saw it and some laugh-lines might not be understood by their children
and grandchildren.

Loyalty oaths, for example, were not explained but they were among the
biggest news stories of the time in San Francisco and Berkeley; great
harm was done to many because of them.

Just about everything about the film is good: writing, acting,
costuming, sets, music, and cinematography.

Don't miss it! It's part of your history that tells much about your
citizenship.

SMARTER MEN WITH GUTS

"Doctor Atomic" is the latest opera by John Adams ("Nixon in China",
"Death of Klinghoffer").

It was a very emotional experience for me to see depictions of Robert
Oppenheimer and Edward Teller and other Manhattan Project principals.

Two questions that have bothered me since the first announcement of what
they had wrought were dealt with, 'though not to my satisfaction: How
did they know they weren't going to blow up the planet? and Why didn't
they invite Emperor Hirohito or General Tojo to the test site to see for
themselves the power of this truly diabolic creation?

This penultimate local performance was preceded by a lecture by the
author during which he told us how he went about creating this work,
including his extensive research. Much, if not most, of Peter Sellars'
libretto are direct quotes garnered from a variety of documents and memoirs.

I shed many a tear during the performance not drawn out as much from
what was on the stage as by but I took with me to the performance.

The stark choreography of Lucinda Childs suggested the power of
Ballanchine's, the suavity of Bob Fosse's, the energy of Michael Kidd's,
and the machismo of Gene Kelly's. During some scenes, the dancers were
wearing what appeared to be dance sneakers.

I guess the orchestra, masterfully conducted by Donald Runnicles,
numbered about sixty. The music was at the contemporary limit of my
ability to comprehend. It's a very emotional score using everything
possible to manipulate our emotions: that's a good thing. Some of the
passages were quite beautiful, others intentionally disturbing and a bit
ugly.

I can conclude only as I did above: Don't miss it! It's part of your history

About 24 hours ago, I searched <"Icono Clast" + McCarthy> and got 18
relevant posts dating from 1994 (including at least one from you). I
spent about half an hour editing them for content relevant to your
question and posted the result. Well, I thought I did . . . where is
it???

Anyone truly interested in the answer to your question can do the same
search. There are references to Joe McCarthy, Helen Gahagan Douglas,
Julius and Ethen Rosenberg, Richard Nixon, Roy Cohn, Ronald Reagan,
HUAC, and more. I found it fun reading but, then, I wrote the stuff.

References to fourteen of them follow the sig.
