Travelling upfrom LA and then across to Sunnyvale,CA
I might actually get there late in the evening , stay over night(any
suggestions for nice place to stay up there welcome) and then head over to
Sunnyvale the afternoon of the next day.

You may want to come in from the south entrance (Hwy 41 from Hwy 99),
go through Mariposa Grove and drive down to the Valley. For October
you should be able to book a place in the Valley. Then the spend the
next morning in the Valley, drive to Sunyvale after lunch.

If you come up from the south, bear in mind that it will take you an hour to
get from the park boundary to Yosemite Village. It's a BIG park.

Ad absurdum per aspera
August 12th, 2006, 01:57 AM
I get different semi-official looking opinions on whether CA 140 is
still closed or semi-open again, sort of, with one-way escorted
convoys, from
http://inciweb.org/incident/236/ and
http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi

41 may have 30-minute delays at Wawona, as viewed by the Park Service:
http://www.nps.gov/yose/now/conditions.htm
though the Caltrans site doesn't really mention anything about that.

Doubtless the particulars of both will change between now and October
(probably changing for the better, since I think the underlying cause
of most problems was a wet winter, which inevitably results in a
massive bloom of "orange coneflower" on mountain roads).

Another approach, no pun intended and not much of one achieved, is to
brush past Mono Lake and then over Tioga Pass and down -- a route that
you wouldn't be able to take during the months of snow closure (and
whose desert stretches en route to Mono Lake might not be everyone's
idea of fun in high summer).

If the roads are open you really can't go wrong with any of the
suggestions, especially if you think of this as a reconnaissance
mission for what may well be a string of longer visits.

Enjoy your trip,
--Joe

The Caltrans one looks like the same description of 140 that they've
had for a couple of months!

I'd go with the InciWeb information, since we know it's recent (the
Aug. 7th press release reiterated the convoy times), and since it's
the one that the Yosemite web site recommends.

may know why) thanks for the info

I would time your arrival to visit Glacier Point at Sunset, that would
mean leaving LA at no later than 1pm.

Stay in the valley, which will require you make reservations ASAP...

Midweek you should be able to get most types (I checked the 11th) on
the weekends it is doubtful you will get into the Yosemite Lodge (I
checked the 13th)... but a heated cabin at Camp Curry is availible.

MAKE YOUR RESERVATION AS SOON AS YOU HAVE A DATE CERTAIN.

Here is the only web site for reservations in the valley:

http://www.yosemitepark.com

These are some pics I took in June:

Thanks for the info jay
Whats the best way of doing this, i will be leaving LA about 9am in the
morning, i want to do Mono Lake and Yosemite and have to be in Sunnyvale, CA
by 6pm the following day. Looking at the maps the best way is to do Mono
Lake first, stay over around Momom Lake and then drive over the Tiogra pass
and have and have a few hours in Yosemite, however i would like to see
Yosemite at sunset but then that means driving over the Tiogra pass to Mono
Lake the next morning(it looks like you gte the best views driving to the
lake that way) and then driving it back over to go to Sunnyvale, it says
the Tiogra pass is about 80 miles, and id be doing it one way and then back,
is this feesible ?

Are you planning to come up from LA on the western side of the Sierra,
spend the night in Yosemite Valley, then drive over to Mono Lake in
the morning, then double back west to Sunnyvale? Quite a bit of driving,
but you could do it.

Be aware that there's a small (but not quite zero) chance of Tioga Pass
being closed temporarily due to an early snowfall. That happened to me
once the first weekend in October. At least if you're planning on coming
into Yosemite from the west, you'll already be there and can abandon your
Mono Lake plans if the pass is closed. That's better than being stuck on
the eastern side of the pass. But as I say, the odds of that happening
are low.

Yes that was the intention, it'll be the 9th /10th October.

I guess the thing to do is to try check the weather the day before/same day
and maybe alter my plan from there. Thanks again for the info.

Go up 395 to Mono Lake, than into Yosemite from 120 Tioga Pass. But
before you leave LA check to make sure Tioga Pass is open. Otherwise
forget Mono lake and just go up 99 to enter through the southern entry
to Yosemite.

No. Is a road where the max speed limit is 45 and most is 35 mph all the
way through Yosemite. It will take most of the day to see the valley, which
is going to be the most interesting part for a one day sightseeing trip. It
will take you 4.5 hours or so from Yosemite Valley to SF. You will not have
freeway until you get to Manteca and Highway 99 / 120 merge.
