Transfer Gatwick to The Strand Area of London

I'll be making my first trip to London in a few weeks.

Our flight arrives at Gatwick and we are staying at the Strand Palace
hotel. Any recommendations on how to get from the airport to the hotel
are appreciated.

TIA,

DS

The Gatwick Express (http://www.gatwickexpress.co.uk/) runs to Victoria
Station four times an hour. From there, a short cab ride would suffice.

Dave Hatunen answers:
| Train to Blackfriars station and cab to hotel.

This train is called Thameslink.

Both routes operate four times an hour. Thameslink is slightly slower
(Gatwick Express is nonstop) and slightly cheaper. But the hotel is
closer to Blackfriars than to Victoria -- roughly 0.5 vs. 1.5 miles --
which is enough to offset the time difference. So go with Thameslink
and Blackfriars (provided that it's operating when you get to the
airport -- service was suspended at some times last month due to
construction, and I don't know if that's finished).

In any case a cab is a good choice for the final stage.

Thanks to your posting I have discovered that you can now have a 'live'
listing of train times from Gatwick at
http://www.livedepartureboards.co.uk...ary.aspx?T=GTW
So you can now see how late your train is running, and indeed if it is
running.
the 'planned' service alterations on Thameslink, as opposed to the
'unplanned' ones are shown on their website:

"Thameslink" Train to Blackfriars, you should add. And either a
leisurely stroll, or a bus to the Strand would suffice, depending on
the amount of luggage carried by our dear traveller. Not all of us are
rich enough to afford London cabs (if you can locate one). However, if
our traveller is not financially challenged, he/she can take a
"Gatwick Express" to Victoria, and then a cab (considerably more
expensive on both counts), or a "South Central Trains" service to
Victoria or London Bridge. Oh, the joys of free enterprise on the
railways.

Transfer Gatwick to The Strand Area of London

Train to central London. Gatwick Express goes to Victoria non-stop,
Connex has a stopping service (cheaper) to Victoria, Thameslink goes
to London Bridge. The Strand Palace is more or less between the two.

You could take a taxi once you get to central London, or:

From Victoria you could take the (tube) District Line to Temple
Underground, and walk 10-15 minutes from there to the Strand (a bit
further east than the Savoy). Or get the 11 bus which should pass the
hotel door - be warned, though, there isn't a lot of room for luggage
and if you arrive in the rush hour, you might have to wait until the
crowds have got to work.

From London Bridge, if the timing's right, you can take a boat from
London Bridge City Pier to Savoy Pier, from where it's about 10
minutes walk up a slope to the Strand and the Strand Palace. The bots
don't run late in the evening and only hourly during the middle of the
day.

Or you could take bus RV1 towards Covent Garden - it should pass the
hotel door - or the 521 to Waterloo via Bank and get off at the bottom
of Aldwych - about 5 minutes walk to the hotel. These would give you
less hassle but take a bit of time.

On the Tube you would take the Jubilee Line to Waterloo, change to
Northern or Bakerloo to Charing Cross, and you would have a good 10-15
minutes walk along the Strand - and fair bit of walking and up and
down stairs while changing lines.

You can also access this information if you have a WAP enabled phone,
which is very handy.
