Driving north of the Mediterranean

Hello!

we are thinking with friends to make a trip during the summer by car in
the Mediterranean countries. We would start from Athens, most probably
pass by boat to Italy, go to Toscane, Southern France (surely Marseille)
and then either Northern Spain (Basque Country, Galicia) or down Eastern
Spain (Barcelona, Valencia, Andalucia?). And of course back!
I am looking for all useful information I can get! Interesting places
along this itinerary, interesting dates in August (festivals etc.),
other itinerary suggestions, economic accomodating solutions, budget
estimation for 10-15 days, in fact about all!!!

Thank you very much in advance!
John

I would suggest adding a day, so you'd have 10 more seconds at each
stop to make a couple of pictures, too, before hurrying to the next
country.

I could go into a lot of detail here but I don't really think you can really
be serious about this trip.

What you propose is certainly possible but would require at least 4 - 5
weeks, preferably a lot more if you want to spend any time at these festivals
and so on. (Unless that is you are attracted by the motor-rally style of
motoring which would involve many days of continuous high speed driving.)

and sample the spaghetti bol and the interesting bathrooms.

Just the ferry to Italy, depending on where in Italy, takes the best part
of two
days.

Not really. Patras to Brindisi is overnight, and to Ancona is less than a
day.

I spent 15 days driving around Greece.

I think you should do the same

When we made the trip Patras to Ancona via the Superfast it left
Greece about 6pm, arrived about 3-4pm following day. That didn't
count time for boarding (including passport checks) and getting
onshore at Ancona.

It's why I said "depending on where in Italy". You have chosen the
shortest
route. When I did Ancona Patras it was almost 48 hours including all the
buggering around to get on and off the ferry. Maybe the loading and the
ferries
are faster now.

Rough estimate: more than 3'000km, some 50h driving,
and back to Athens - so close to 100h driving in 10 or
maybe 15 days. Just for the overall trip, no detours, not
considering jams (August!) .... .

Hardly any need for information on interesting places along
such an itineray :-)
