Transportation CDG Airport to Hotel in Paris
 

I know there's very little activity in this newsgroup these days, but
just in case there's still someone here who can help...

I'm looking for inexpensive transportation for my wife and I from CDG
airport to central Paris. Yes, I know I can take the train, but that's
too much trouble with luggage.

Should I just find a taxi when we arrive? Should I use Uber? Is there
a good taxi/limousine service I should book in advance? Any other
suggestions?

If I just pick up a taxi when I arrive, about how much will it cost?
Same question with Uber--about how much will it cost?

I don't know yet what time we will arrive at CDG, but it will probably
be around noon.

There should be shared shuttle services. That means they may not drop
you off at your hotel first.

You could check sites like viator.com or getyourguide.com.

Would be cheaper than a taxi but take longer.

I'm not sure if Uber is officially allowed to operate in Paris. But you
can get estimates on their site. Of course fares change in price
depending on time of day.

In addition to the other ideas: there is the direct "Roissy-Bus" without
intermediate stops between CDG and Opéra, and there is the (sub)urban
bus line 350 between CDG and Gare de l'Est. Both might follwow different
strike calendars against each other and against the SNCF/RER trains ;-)

Or go ahead and take a moto-taxi ;o) normally these need to be pre-
booked, but at CDG it happens that they are just there and waiting for

The last time I took the RER B and A from Nation to CDG (changing from
B to A at Chatelet is very easy: just a matter of crossing a platform
at the same level; in other respects changing at Chatelet is best
avoided, as it's the most pickpocket-ridden station in Paris) I was
surprised at how much it cost, so with two people it could easily come
to 20€ (I'm guessing, I don't really remember, except that it was more
than I expected). Likewise the taxi could cost more than the 50€ that I
suggested, especially if they surcharge for baggage (something they
don't always do). Once you're in central Paris the taxis are not too
expensive (cheaper than Marseilles -- not that you care about that, but
I do). The taxi from the Gare de Lyon to where my daughter lives (close
to the Porte de Vincennes), a journey of about 10-15 minutes, typically
costs about 10€.

In summary, you're probably right: taking the RER and then a taxi may
well not produce a big enough saving to bother about.

As a seasoned traveller you probably know this already, but talking of
pickpockets, a few pieces of advice. Try not to look too much like
tourists in the Metro: no talking loudly in English, no expensive
cameras around the neck, and perhaps less obvious, no looking at a map
of Paris.

Uber is certainly available. At least, it was a year or two ago, but
there have been efforts by the regular taxi companies to have it
banned. I don't know if these have succeeded.

LOL! I can try, but in my experience, everywhere in Europe, tourists
look like tourists and are easy to recognize as such, if for no other
reason than the differences in clothing.

And I always travel with a camera (not a very expensive one, but
still...) around my neck.

I travel with an under-the-pants belt wallet. Maybe a really good
pickpocket might get it, but it would be very hard. I've traveled
pretty extensively in Europe and never had my pocket picked.

The bus (as well as the RER) needs 5 zones - so if you manage to get a
"carnet" at CDG, for 2 persons it's around 13 EUR (paying on board it's
around 19 EUR). Observe: the all-day pass "Mobilis" is not valid at CDG.

and there were people coming up to us asking if we wanted a taxi.

Turns out the only place where official taxis are allowed to pick up at
that station is to the side of the building, with marked signs. The
licensed cabbies aren't going around trying to convince people to ride
with them.

Instead they just queue up where the people are suppose to line up.
These unlicensed "taxis" are apparently dodgy. If they can't even get
vetted for Uber, you have to wonder about them.

I made exactly that observation at the Gare du Nord two years ago. I
wasn't fooled, but the (English) people behind me in the queue almost
were, until I warned them that these people were not offering proper
taxis. They had just arrived from London on the Eurostar, and I also
warned them that they need to leave a LOT of time to get through the
controls on the way back. I had just come back from London myself on
the Eurostar, and at St Pancras I could just walk through with no
delays. On the outward journey from Paris it had taken a good 45
minutes and the information about where one was supposed to wait was
between minimal and non-existent. (The delays were caused by the UK
passport controls and security checks.) This was in 2016. It may be
better (or worse!) now.
