.........London Southend..........that is!!!! Who makes this stuff up?
It's Southend Airport....for gawds sake! [though ties in nicely with
another thread about how cheap Ryanair are.....well, if you were
coming into London and land at Southend, its gotta be cheap because
the onward time and money will knock a bit of a hole in Ryanair ticket
price and convenience..]

Is it much harder to get to (from Euston, say) than Gatwick or Heathrow?

LHR is on the Tube (subway system) which makes it easy and cheap to get
to. None of the other London airports are. IMO, that is the key
variable in an airport - if it is connected to the city's subway system.
Both of Chicago's airports are, which is a big plus for Chicago. None
of New York's are (in each case, you have to jump through hoops to get
there by public transit).

Not much of a hoop at JFK. One change from the subway to Airtrain JFK.

London Stansted airport is accessible by train from Liverpool Street Tube
station, no worse than changing tube trains. Pretty much the same for LGW
from Victoria station. Luton looks to be a bit hoopy (I've never been
there) but London City doesn't look all that difficult save for the
change to DLR and what seems to be a short walk from the DLR/City Airport
station (I've been through it on the DLR but didn't pay much attention).
