In the US, you can opt-out of the scan, at which point they do a
pat-down. Would be useful to know if the same option exists in
europe.


I seem to recall a notice at Gatwick - no scan, no fly.

The consequences are a train ride to Paris and flying home from there!

This simply increases the cost of visiting Britain, which frankly is
expensive enough!
