Didn't realise how small is Maasdijk - my friends' extended families seem to own most of it! :-)) Great to be back after some 20+ years. Bad news - my old flat in Leyweg, Haag, used to look out over Westland polder - now there's a further few miles of city! But, as always, Dutch hospitality reigned supreme! Alan |

Alan and you had lots of real Indonesian food? -- Martin Spoiled for it, but not via restaurants since our friends are highly qualified Indonesian chefs. We did collect from their highly recommended take-away in Maasluis once. But questioning when there, we were told they're still all around, but have often moved off 'High Street' positions. But you were right - just one mediocre Chinese/pseudo Indonesian in De Lier! Alan |

Easyjet to fly from London Southend Airport

Incidentally, I'm not sure when Gatwick became London Gatwick but it is the same thing as Southend..... it's 25+ miles from the centre of London and situated in Surrey! From Euston, you'll need to change on the underground (Liverpool street, Fenchurch street that sort of thing) before taking overground to Southend. However, to Gatwick, you need to change underground at London Bridge (or Clapham, I believe) to pick up Gatwick Express. Kings Cross (next to Euston) is a direct underground to Heathrow.. Thing is, Southend will be used for short haul European flights which are more likely to be currently served (around London, that is..) by Gatwick, Stanstead, Luton, City Airport.....not so much from Heathrow... So, the real comparison is between Southend and Gatwick, Stanstead and Luton..... My original point was that Southend (as is Gatwick) is a fair way from * London* and coming into these airports means onward time and costs to add to the Ryanair 'cheap' fares... Why do you keep going on about Ryanair? Gatwick is dominated by Easyjet and BA, with only a small handfull Ryanair routes. And they don't fly from Southend at all, that's something Easyjet are planning to do. |

When we flew Ryanair to Stockholm/Stavska we were leaving from Cambridge and Stansted was far more convenient than LHR or LGW. -- Dave Hatunen, Tucson, Baja Arizona, out where the cacti grow |

LHR is on the Tube (subway system) which makes it easy and cheap to get to. None of the other London airports are. IMO, that is the key variable in an airport - if it is connected to the city's subway system. Both of Chicago's airports are, which is a big plus for Chicago. None of New York's are (in each case, you have to jump through hoops to get there by public transit). -- But the Bush apologists hope that you won't remember all that. And they also have a theory, which I've been hearing more and more - namely, that President Obama, though not yet in office or even elected, caused the 2008 slump. You see, people were worried in advance about his future policies, and that's what caused the economy to tank. Seriously. (Paul Krugman - Addicted to Bush) |

London Stansted airport is accessible by train from Liverpool Street Tube station, no worse than changing tube trains. Pretty much the same for LGW from Victoria station. Luton looks to be a bit hoopy (I've never been there) but London City doesn't look all that difficult save for the change to DLR and what seems to be a short walk from the DLR/City Airport station (I've been through it on the DLR but didn't pay much attention). -- Dave Hatunen, Tucson, Baja Arizona, out where the cacti grow |

Easy, but only cheap-ish by London standards, which are not those of most of the world. None of the other London airports are. Stansted is pretty expensive to get to and there are no trains to get you there for early morning flights. The two cheapest airports to get to from a major city centre that I know of are Istanbul and Edinburgh. Istanbul has a more convenient and comfortable service with the metro, but it doesn't run 24 hours and you can get stuck with using taxis. Edinburgh's has a night bus service. San Diego Airport is in the City Centre. Las Vegas Airport is near the Strip. Newcastle (UK) Airport is at the end of one of the Tyneside Metro lines and I have unlimited Metro travel for £25 per year. -- JohnT |
