Belgians dump chip fat down the Toilet
http://www.flandersnews.be/cm/de.red.../0805527_chips
Belgians dump chip fat down the loo (Belga) Tue 27/05/08 12:23 - Without a doubt chips or french fries are Belgians' favourite delicacy. Today chips are on the menu in the VRT canteen and well before lunch-time there was already a special buzz about the news room as colleagues contemplated a longer queue than usual, but a wonderful reward at the end. With so much ado about the humble Belgian fry, you might expect that Belgians would also pay great care to one of the more unfortunate by- products, used chip fat. Research from Ghent University, however, shows major problems with the recycling effort. (Belga) How well or badly chip fat is recycled is a serious subject of research at Ghent University. Scientists have counted the amount of chip fat collected at recycle centres across the land. In all 7,000 tonnes is handed in, but this figure fades into insignificance compared with the total amount of chip fat used in the country: 21,000 tonnes! Ghent University concludes that Belgians need to put grease to their elbow and improve recycling efforts. Down the loo!!! At present it's feared that much of the fat that is not recycled, is dumped down the toilet, poured down the drain or included in ordinary rubbish collections. Belgium also has a special organisation dedicated to the collection of chip fat. Valorfrit's Tom Smidt says it will reinforce the message that chip fat needs to be recycled properly via existing channels. In addition the organisation will be looking at the creation of new recycling opportunities in the big cities. Another eight days wait... The research also showed that the average Belgian uses his chip pan once every nine days. Chip fat or oil is replaced three times a year. Deepfreeze chips are most popular among young families. |

When last I heard you could be fined for not sorting the stuff but, since the municipalities were not properly organized, the sorted refuse was combined and sent to landfills. -- James Silverton Potomac, Maryland E-mail, with obvious alterations: not.jim.silverton.at.verizon.not |

A comment on a TV news broadcast here in the U.S. mentioned that efforts are being made here to reprocess discarded restaurant cooking fat into diesel fuel.
