Early boarding and the occasional upgrade using sticker points... That's

about
it.

Oh - and the 25% mileage bonus.

and using BC checkin, useful on BA long-hauls from LHR T4 :-)

Is it? BA doesn't have a OW Ruby status so there's conflitcing
reports whether BA recoqnizes AA Gold (OW Ruby)

Does AA give priority seating to Gold members (such as exit rows, and
seats toward the front)? Alaska and UA do that for their frequent flyers.

Yes. Gold and up can pre-reserve those seats; they're open to anyone once
it's under airport control.

Typically the status starts as soon as you have the miles, which would be in
Dec 05.

If your outbound brings you over the limit, you will be qualified on your
return trip.

But what is AA Gold good for?

Priority boarding
Upgrades in advance (if not yet Gold, you can only upgrade on full fare
tickets- I believe)
25 percent mileage bonus
Elite seating

In 2003, I got suckered by AA into taking its "fast track" offer
(something like a few flights within 3 months) to be AA Platinum.

I found the AA Platinum to be completely useless, and never flown
it since I became Platinum. :-) Traded those few AA miles for
Hilton points.

Why useless? You get 100 percent bonus miles
Lounge use for "international"
Priority boarding (ahead of Gold)
Upgrades 72 hours in advance
Priority phone
Other "special" offers

These seats include a one seat class upgrade if flying on an aircraft
that was built for one more seat class than is being sold on that
aircraft. For example, this would include a 3 class plane that only has
2 classes for sale. This would generally happen domestically on
widebody. I also believes this is true of the flights to places like
Shannon where only economy class is sold on a plane with 2 seating classes.

That's an excellent point; it's gotten a lot less frequent to find the "3
class aircraft sold as 2 classes" on the routes I fly. Part of that was
converting a fair number of 767s down to 2-classes, but that may also just
be the routes I fly. Used to be that you could pretty dependably get one of
those by flying LAX-EWR rather than LAX-JFK.

For example, this would include a 3 class plane that only has 2 classes

Interesting. Yeah, it looks like those are 2-class sold as 1. I'm a bit
amazed that they don't sell the domestic FC section as business, but hey,
weireder things have happened. I guess one other case where they could have
2 classes sold as 1 would be if they ever substituted AA metal for an
American Eagle RJ flight.
