Just FYI, in addition to the other charges people have discussed we
end up spending the following on a typical 7 day cruise for 2 adults
who enjoy good wine and drinks but never drink to excess...

Wine with dinner each night: $35-50 day
Drinks at other times: $30-50 day
Shore trips (if we have not been there before and do the ships tours):
$175 per port
Misc. stuff, photos, etc.: $50/cruise
Tips: $300-$400/cruise total includes onboard staff, tour tips, small
bribes, etc.

Now, you could cut most all of this out if you wanted or needed to.
For example, an unlimited soda card runs $5/day/person which could
take the place of all drinks. But please, do tip the staff
well...they earn it and need it.

So when you see a special, like $899 for an 11 day Caribbean cruise from
HAL, how much more beyond the $899 should you expect to pay? I assume the
$899 doesn't include port fees, etc. but what other extra charges should I
expect?

Thanks

For me, the total bill for a week (not counting tips) is about
$300-350. I keep the wine bill down by buying into the 'wine for a
week' deal that most ships have and I don't drink much.

I usually don't do but one shore excursion as a day at the beach with
friends is enough fun for me.....

Scotty asked " what other extra charges should I expect? "

Once we are on the ship ( excluding tipping ) our extra charges are 0.

We are not drinkers, the free iced tea, coffee & lots of water is all we
need.

We do not go to the casino.

We do not take ship excursions. There are plenty of taxis available at
the ports.
We even enjoy the empty ship when docked in port.

We do not eat in the specialty restaurants.

We do not shop in the gift shops onboard.

We do not use the overpriced spa services.

We will be on the Sleazy 3 & expect to have a great time. There is so
much available that is free. Food, entertainment, movies, library etc.
Most of all, we will be sailing with new friends.

Thanks to all who replied. I got the information I needed. I was looking for
"hidden costs", I expect taxes, port charges, tipping, & alcohol. I was
looking for what hotels do these days, "resort fees", etc.

Figure $10 per person per day for tips if you are calculating down to

that
level.

For an 11 day cruise that's $220 - not what I would call nickel and
dime level.

Try Motel 6 and a stop at Disneyland. The $10 tip has been around for

years and
is considered part of the cost of the cruise.

It was established due to low life pax who stiffed the help.

899+110+tax+port charge x 2 . If you can't afford it, DON"T GO

The OP just asked what extra costs he could expect presumably so that
he would know if he COULD afford it. That is not what I would call an
unreasonable question, nor would I call $110 per person an
insignificant additional cost.

Most of the answers said that there wouldn't be any additional costs
as long as he didn't drink, or take the shore excursions or eat at the
extra price restaurants. The other persons seemed to be saying that
the taxes and the port costs might be included. But they didn't
mention tips.

I don't see why mentioning tips should get Motel 6 and a stop at
Disneyland (which is not exactly low cost either) and low life pax as
a response.
