Default Athens Airport and Hotels

I understand there is a new airport in Athens now. We went in '91 and
stayed the night prior to flying at a nice airport hotel in Glyfada. Does
anyone know where the new airport in Athens is located and what hotels are
nearby? The only one I could locate was a Sofitel and it was a bit pricey.
Our concern is that we fly out of ATH at 7 am for the US via Zurich and need
to be sure to arrive in plenty of time. Are taxi drivers available so early
in the morning (5 am) from the city center/hotels? Any help and direction
is greatly appreciated.

Karen

Unfortunately the new Athens airport is hell and gone from Athens itself. We
took the bus to and from the Plaka and it was a long trip (close to an hour
with all the traffic and construction). The only hotel at the airport is the
Sofitel you already found. And yes, it is insanely overpriced. Sorry I don't
have better news for you.

I took that same flight last year, left Athens at about 4:30 am and
had plenty of time, I had arranged for a private driver to bring us.

I have been in and out of the new airport several times and don`t
remember their being any hotels nearby, so one has to go
into town, about 1 hour by taxi.

Curious, why would one torture one`s self in this fashion,
up a 4 AM to take a flight anywhere. I can see it if one
is in still in the back pack age and taking charters.

Otherwise I checked the net and found no connecting
flight via Zurich from Athens to JFK?? What is that
US destination city?

There are plenty of flights to NY, for instance, from Athens
leaving at reasonable hours. Delta flies non-stop to JFK.
Other connecting flights leave around noon, or between
10 AM and 2 PM. Chicago flights leave earlier and Boston
flights are very early.

One of the problems these days is searching for the
ever cheaper flight and ending up zonked.

Thanks everyone for your responses. When I made my original plans for this
trip, I had no idea about the new airport. Glad I found out about it prior
to leaving.

We are connecting in Zurich for a flight to Dallas, following through to LA.
Sounds like it it going to be one hell of a day....oh well, got to make the
most of it.

How much di your private driver cost?
Wondering if it might be worth it over the bus. There are 3 of us,
including a child.

Thanks again,

1) No early morning flights. Nothing before 10 AM.

I accidentally ended up with a 5:20am international flight a couple days
from now (Istanbul-Frankfurt). Who comes up with stuff like that? will
people be checking in at 3:20am?
