I find it amusing how some posters become very emotional
after one bad experience with an airline and start badmouthing
it at every opportunity instead of calmly considering the facts.

If it were just my experience then I wouldn't have posted that. But it
isn't. Numerous individuals, including at least one journalist, have
reported similar experiences.

Here's some more on the Jet Blue policy:

The difference is that if United cancels a flight, they'll get you
on another flight to your destination in a reasonable time period,
albeit perhaps in not the most direct way.

Except, of course, when they don't:

etc etc etc.

Jetblue isn't perfect, but United is no paragon of virtue either.
Given a choice I'd fly Jetblue because they have a lot more leg room
(both regular seats and the extra cost extra space seats) and their
attitude is far less toxic.

Has anyone flown Virgin America on this route? I think they just
started SFO-BOS recently.

Thanks

Of course, many more have reported horrendous experiences with United.
There is an entire site devoted to this:

... or deliver you to a different airport and dump you the

... or, after a misconnect caused by their own late arrival, offer
to rebook you on a flight two days later:

Stories like this are the reason why United is so hated. They are
second to last among US airlines in the American Customer Satisfaction
Index; only US Airways is worse.

Jet Blue can't do that because they
have so few flights between your origin and destination, often only one
per day, and subsequent day's flights are likely to be fully booked.

Even though JetBlue has few nonstops between the Bay Area and Boston,
they have plenty of flights connecting through JFK. Considering that
JetBlue cancels flights much less frequently than United, your chances
of getting to Boston and back are better on JetBlue than on United.

Jet Blue likes to boast about how they'll refund your fare if they can't
accommodate you

So does United. See Rule 260 in United's contract of carriage.

Really, is it a lot to expect that an airline will get you between point
A and point B at the agreed upon fare?

Every airline in the U.S., including both JetBlue and United, reserves
the right to refund your ticket if they cancel the flight and you do
not like the alternative transportation they offer.
