With the growth of the industry's capacity the cabins have to be
filled. With the amount of fine dining aficionados being a finite
number, more and more of the "McDonald's RULES" crowd will be on the
ships, and the lines have to cater to demand. Period.

It's not real good on the cruise ships either- frankly I'm astonished that
there's people here stating that the food is better at JR's then in the main
dining rooms or the Windjammer! I guess we're talking the McDonald's RULES
crowd?

Personally I think it is wonderful that the larger ships are offering more
options for people with different tastes. It is one reason I like NCL's
freestyle cruising. I like the fine dining, and I like what they do in the
dining rooms with Vegetarian Cuisine. I am not crazy about doing a buffet
for dinner. But I am glad that I can take my kids along and they can choose to
eat at Johnny Rockets.

that are crying the blues over the JR's
paltry $4 price tag have NEVER eaten a really good burger

I'm one of those crying the blues and I could care less about the burger, good
or bad! I'm upset about the charge, which, albeit paltry is yet another trend
along the path to charges for virtually all on food served on board!
(Incidentally, the charge will NOT remain paltry for long! Once accepted, it
will be increased significantly! Remember how they got people to accept
charges for Porto Finos? EIGHT DOLLARS! Now, it's TWENTY FIVE!

Already, there are rumors about upcoming charges for desserts served on RCI.
They could be just rumors..but, rumor or not, THAT IS THE TREND and will happen
unless and until passengers band together and make their feelings known!

My sentiments exactly!!! And when I first went to Portofino's, I paid only
$6. There is a charge for Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream and if you saw the
portion they give, you would laugh hysterically. They should supply a
magnifying glass with it!!! If the cruising public doesn't take a stand,
it's really going to get out of hand.

Same on Mariner of the Seas. I saw a lot more action at the FREE ice cream
then I did at Ben and Jerry's.

Except it's soft serve frozen yogurt MIX. It's not close to being ice cream.

yep- that's the one- with all the big race screens (that was cool!) next to
the restaurant. Again, the burgers were okay- but nothing "to write home"
about. We actually ate there to see if the burgers were better in the
land-based JRs as opposed to the Explorer's JR's. It wasn't- and the steep
bill was mind-boggling for a couple of burgers and fries and sodas.

perhaps therein is another argument though- these burgers taste better for
free because you get what you pay for? Somehow, they just aren't worth $4?
hmmm....

Cheers,
Paul

Was that the JR out by the Airport in the Hilton.

We have eaten there, and had a standard meal, but enjoyed the experience
immensely. Only because the kids who worked there were classmates of our

son at
UNR and we got to joke and kid around with them a lot.

The food was nothing to brag about but the kids were a real delight.

Best Cheeseburger I have ever had anywhere, bar none, was with Sitmar on

the
FairSea. Would love to have that experience just one more time ........

In article , Paul says...

Absolutely my point! I think those that are crying the blues over the

JR's
paltry $4 price tag have NEVER eaten a really good burger (and I've had
SPECTACULAR burgers served to me in RCCL's main dining room- you just

need
to know that you can always - a should always!- send food back that you
aren't happy with) We ate once there on the Explorer (and really- not to

go
as a meal- but because we wanted shakes- which were VERY good. But we
decided to try their burgers anyway) and that was plenty! We never

ventured
back. (The onion rings were good- but then, they generally are anywhere

you
get them)

For those upset about this, I'll reiterate that the original Cruise News
article (Bill123, you need to read this and then apologize to me for
misrepresentation. You're wrong about me, bucko!) stated that all C&A
members (most of the complainers in this thread, I think) do get a coupon
for a free meal. (Someone else posted that C&A members weren't charged,
period. That's odd. btw- if you ever cruised on RCCL, you're a C&A

member)

Burgers are burgers, and fast food is fast food. Would everyone be as
emotional about this if it was a McDonald's (or maybe more accurately a
Wendys) aboard? JR=McDonald's with dancers & singers, period. Gee, they
never even performed for us!

btw- we ate at a JR's in Reno (inside the casino, no less!) and it was

about
the same experience there (although they did sing and dance): burgers

that
were so-so, and everything else only ok. I think the total bill was

about
$20 for two. (and that was a light lunch)

Cheers,
Paul

I can go to JR locally any time. Can't really see the attraction of a
chain restaurant on a ship. it is not why I cruise.

You're using the "slippery slope" argument- but this isn't generally a valid
one.

The mainstay of cruising is the free meals- and being an avid cruiser
(aren't we all?) I see no evidence that the cruise lines are planning to
drop all-inclusive meals (or even just all-inclusive desserts) now or at any
time in the future. It would kill the industry. I'd probably see no real
value in cruising if it was like going to Disney and paying an exhorbitant
amount of money to just stay there and then having to pay for meals as well.
I'd find some other all-inclusive vacation (heads-up Sandals, Breezes, etc)
habit.

I'll join you in personally boycotting (and squashing) the cruise industry
if they ever make it a non-inclusive vacation.

Not to beat a dead horse- but I go back to the McDonald's analogy- if
McDonald's was onboard Voyager (and her sisters) from day one, there's no
way that anyone would have said- "hey, the meals there should be free!!!"-
it just wouldn't happen. RCCL should have never put a fast food chain
(evidently not a big one- I never heard of them until the Voyager class came
about. They still aren't here on the right coast - at least that I know of)
on their cruise ships- they lose control of the product. If it's that big a
deal, close down the JR's on the Voyager class ships, and just reopen it as
a Windjammer burger/pizza shop (like those found throughout the rest of the
industry).

Also, having worked in many shades of retail, I can tell you that most cost
increases are driven by abuses by a small minority of customers (as in
everything else, too!). I'd be willing to bet that there's something other
then cruise-line greed driving decisions like the entry fee to Johnny
Rockets.

Again though- for those of you REALLY that concerned about missing out on a
second or third rate burger at a fast food joint on a Luxury cruise ship-
there's really only one answer. Boycott the JR's! (I'd be willing to bet
most won't... and shame on you!)

Maybe RCCL will pull them out and install another Chops Grille-type of
restaurant!!! Now that would be wonderful! I'd like to see a Benihana
Japanese steak house-style restaurant!!! (the kind where you sit around the
grill and they cook your meal in front of you)

Cheers,
Paul
