Singapore Airlines jet makes forced landing in Melbourne

August 25, 2004 - 4:29AM

Suspected engine failure forced a Boeing 777 passenger jet to make an
emergency landing at Melbourne's Tullamarine this morning.

After reporting mechanical trouble at take-off from the airport about
12.50am, the Singapore Airlines plane returned, making a safe landing
about 1.45am.

Eleven fire trucks rushed to the scene after the pilot reported the
engine problems.

An ambulance spokesman said there had been no reports of injuries.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it was investigating and
would be sending a team down to Melbourne later in the day.

"The engine must have failed on take-off because there was debris on
the runway," the spokesman said.

"We are putting a team together to go down to Melbourne and we will be
getting hold of the flight recorders to download information."

Singapore Airlines could not immediately be contacted.

That's a pretty insightful investigation, even before the engine is taken
off the wing, the conclusion is "must have been debris on the runway. Sounds
like the guy with the concorde landing gear spacer theory.

I read it as "The engin must have failed on take-off because there was
"engine" debris on the runway."

Will be interesting to see whether said debris is FOD or turbine blades from
the 777.
