Default Hello everyone!

Hi there everyone.

I am new to the group and thought I would introduce myself.

Firstly, my name is William. Secondly, I am an Assistant Cruise Director
with one of the major cruise lines.

I really enjoy reading your reviews of cruises (yes I have been lurking for
a little while) as it helps me think of things to make the valued passengers
we recieve have a better time onboard our vessels.

I would like to pose a question to the group if I may;

What is your favorite cruise line and why?

I'm on my way out to sea again for my next contract on Friday for a short 2
month contract but thought I would say hello to everyone first.

I'll divulge a little more information on my next posting .. have a great
day!

Will

Hello Will,
We have only been on 3 different lines so our opinion is very limited.
But hands down we absolutely love Celebrity and can't imagine another
line being better. Our #1 priority is the service we receive from all
crew members we are in contact with during the cruise. They are very
well trained, very efficient and very pleasant. #2 the food is
superior. Choices are above average and the preparation and
presentation are excellent. #3 we enjoy the little surprises we find
throughout the cruise. Fresh flowers in public areas, sorbet pool side
on a hot day and some very nice usable "prizes" given out at trivia not
to mention the lovely perks for captain club members. #4 no annoying
announcements about bingo nor photographers in our face pushing photos.
Perhaps this should be #2 in our opinion. Having said all this I will
admit we are booked on a Carnival cruise for December. Celebrity isn't
having a ship out of Tampa and that is a must for us. I'm sure we will
have a fun, but different good time with Carnival.

Hi, Will,

Our favorite cruise line is the one we're going on next!

Our family of four (kids are now young teens) has taken 10 cruises in the
past 5 years on fairly representative classes of Celebrity, Princess, RCI
and NCL ships, plus 1 small ship river cruise, and our conclusion is, each
line has a heck of a lot to offer, with its own strengths & weaknesses that
generally reflect our personal tastes and interests. If I think the
entertainment on Line A is tops, there are 10 others who think Line B's
where it's at! We do a lot of land travel, but obviously cruise a lot and
intend to keep cruising, and our addicted kids are the next generation of
adult cruisers. Could any one line make us—or, better from a cruise line’s
perspective, our kids—loyalists? Doubtful...the current frequent cruiser
programs offer precious little to cause us to choose Line A over Line B.
Moreover, I think we're like many of today's cruisers who are less wed to
the idea of choosing a cruise for the line/ship than they are to first
selecting a vacation/travel experience for the itinerary, activities and
overall hospitality package available within the price range they've
dedicated to this particular trip. Then, e.g., if three cruises emerge as
offering fairly equal experiences, line plays a deciding role. In the past,
I've often chosen a line new to us just to try something different. As we
begin to run out of lines (within the mass market segment), past experience
with a line will take on greater significance in breaking those ties.
Industry marketers should take note: Having given everyone a try, now's the
time to entice us to develop brand loyalty.

Will, one significant factor that influences our family to feel "warm and
fuzzy" about a line is cruise staffers like you! It really is within your
power to make a difference and cause your clientele to want to return.
Consequently, I think cruise lines would be wise to invest more time/money
in their selection/retention of key hires.

Here's to great times on your 2-month contract!

We've been on NCL, Princess, Carnival, and Celebrity.
Good memories on NCL, Princess, and Celebrity. Celebrity best overall,
Princess next.
It was not good with Carnival.

NCL ... it seems to attract more people like ourselves ... that is
people looking for a relaxed time with flexibility in dining and
entertainment ...
I guess that is what they offer with their freestyle concept ... and
tends to attract those looking just for that ...

More elegance on other lines ... good when we want to feel elegant ...
More activities on other lines ... good when we want to be more active
....
More facilities on other lines ... good when we want to be facilated
....

I don't find big differences in food or service ... as all lines try
(and usually do) provide excellence here ...

Hi Will,
I very much agree with Diana when she said their favorite was the one that
they were going on next, because when I'm asked that, I say, *The one that
I'm on!* We just got off our 29th cruise... the Norwegian Spirit and were
left with very good impressions.. We are presently booked on the HAL Ryndam
in July and Celebrity Millennium next February..We have been on Princess,
HAL, Carnival, RCI, NCL, Celebrity and Renaissance when they were in
business.
We find that the cruise lines are concentrating on better quality of food..A
vast difference for the better on Carnival ships and we also noticed a more
favorable upgrade in that area on NCL.

Itinerary and ships that are well maintained and very clean matter a great
deal to us.. Food, fellow passengers and entertainment follow.

As an Assistant Cruise Director, I think that what we could ask of you is to
keep the nickel and diming announcements to a minimum...especially in the
morning and evening hours and then only if they are important to us, as
passengers. I know it may often not be up to you and you must make them, but
I have heard some very *grating* voiced CDs and it is so annoying that we
purposely avoid whatever they are *selling.*. We take a yellow marker and
highlight the activities that we want to attend or see.

Good luck on your next contract assignment!.. I'll be watching for an
Assistant CD named, Will, on our future cruises!
Please let us hear from you again.

Hi Will,

Welcome to the group.

Been on all the majors multiple times, and some of the minors as well.
I like them all; however, there is one thing I would like to mention
that has direct relevance to your job. I strongly dislike (and I know
other experienced cruisers dislike as well) the growing trend of turning
the cruise director into the chief salesperson for on-board revenue
generators.

As I see it, the primary job of a cruise director should be to help
passengers enjoy their cruising experience.

Dory:
Big mistake...do yourself a favor, get on a bus or even better fly
Southwest Air from Tampa to Ft. Lauderdale and get on the Celebrity
Millennium.

Going from a unique Celebrity experience to the "mass market" Carnival
and you will be disappointed!

Deb
