San Jose to Arenal area

Any advice on arranging transportation between these two points...?
Is it easy to set up?
Do I need to do so before I leave for Costa Rica?
Or can I wait until the morning I want to leave?
Is there public buses that do this route...if so, where can I pick one up?
What is the cost of the tourist bus & the public bus?

We stayed at the Balmoral Hotel while staying in San Jose. Downstairs, off
the lobby, there is a nice little travel and tour shop. We arranged to take
one of the tour busses up there one way for half the price (the actual tour
is round trip). It was VERY reasonable, and we also got to stop in Sarchi
to see them make the oxcarts on the way, and stopped for lunch. Also, the
guide was pointing out things that we would have been unaware of had we just
taken one of the local busses. Jane
