Arkhangelsk airlines, Anotovs and safety
Soon i am planning to travel on Arkhangelsk airlines to Murmansk, probably on a AN-24 Antonov. Never having heard of this airline before, I was wondering what their saftey record was like? AFAIK they are not one of the demerged former aeroflot companies, which gives me (some) confidence.. |

Arkhangelsk Airlines may or may not be an Aeroflot offspring, but the AN-24 model is a vintage Soviet twin-engine turboprop, noisy, slow and uncomfortable. Its safety record is so-so (9.0% hull losses). I don't think you have much choice in flying to Murmansk, though, do you? jrk01 |

My one and only flight on an AN24 was with Cubana from Jamaica to Havana. We made one refuelling stop somewhere in Cuba - I can't offhand recall where. I've posted about this trip here at least once before so I won't bore all the regulars with a rehash! Perhaps out of the way Russian airlines still allow pax to visit the flight deck? If so the flight deck of the AN24 is well worth a look. -- Simon Elliott http://www.ctsn.co.uk/ |
