Where to go in Italy in December outside of large cities
We will be in Italy for the first 2 weeks of December.
We wonder, where can we go at this time of year for nice countryside or small/medium townish walking. We're willing to rent a car. It would be nice to know places that included both interesting nature plus interesting cultural things. We'll spend some days in Rome but seek other ideas. Thanks in advance. |

In Puglia and Basilicata there might be heavy snowfalls. I know they are not normal. but in the last few years snow was more in the south than in the north |

I would suggest Trani Barletta Alberobello. the first two towns are on the sea. If you want to go down south. then lecce is the capital town of baroque art in the south. |

I think winter is the best time to see Flroence. Most of what you want to see in Florence is indoors anyway, and in the winter you won't be trampled by your fellow tourists. The winter is also fine for Bologna. However, Venice is often subject to flooding (acqua alta) in winter. I think the original posters wanted to see some countryside, though, and that part of Italy has lots of fog and rain in the winter. -- Barbara Vaughan My email address is my first initial followed by my surname at libero dot it I answer travel questions only in the newsgroup |

Nearby towns worth visiting include Assisi, Spello, and Gubbio. Perugia is a very nice small university city in its own right, and it's situated in pretty countryside. The only possible problem might be rain and fog, which would obscure the views a bit. -- Barbara Vaughan My email address is my first initial followed by my surname at libero dot it I answer travel questions only in the newsgroup |
