I stand corrected- there are some in NYC and Philly; I wonder how long
they've been here. I know if I asked anyone around here if they've been to
one, I'd get very few affirmative responses. It would probably be followed
up with a "yeah... the food was so-so." (probably a reason I don't know
about them being around here afterall!)

Still better then Applebees.

They are all over the East Coast, in any major city. We have several in
Atlanta. The original Johnny Rockets was in Los Angeles, on Melrose

Avenue.
I was living in LA at the time JR's was rather trendy, of course then it
became a chain and was no longer unique and special. Same with Cheesecake
Factory and California Pizza Kitchen. Two other LA startups that were
wonderful, then became homogenized chain restaurants.

Ernie - with fond memories of when there was only one CPK and CF, both in
Beverly Hills.

Cool!! Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything good about NCL from my
friends who've cruised them. Of course, these same friends aren't really
big fans of RCCL, either. (and I love my RCCL)

Again though- for those of you REALLY that concerned about missing out

there's really only one answer. Boycott the JR's! (I'd be willing to

I will (easy for me, I'm a vegetarian)

Maybe RCCL will pull them out and install another Chops Grille-type of
restaurant!!! Now that would be wonderful! I'd like to see a Benihana
Japanese steak house-style restaurant!!! (the kind where you sit around

the
grill and they cook your meal in front of you)

NCL has this, on the dawn anyway.

I'd beg to differ with your opinion that a "luxury cruise" ship is defined
by free burger joints aboard. But, to each his/her own...

btw- NYC/North Jersey will have another JR's from May to October this year
on certain days of the week... anyone know what I'm talking about? This
should be easy! (Hint- it floats, it's big, it has better restaurants then
JR's, for sure)

I wuldn't consider an RCi Voyager class ship to be a luxury cruise
ship. See, that's the thing. If we were talking true luxury cruising,
there wouldn't be the added fee. We're talking mainstream mass market
cruise line. Cheap fare gets you room and board (there are free
(included) meals to be had), and little else.

DG,

I was shocked to find that there is a JR's in our neck of the woods-
Franklin Mills Mall! There were a few others in the Philly area, but I
can't remember the exact locations. Check out www.johnnyrockets.com - I
think that's the site name. They also have restaurants in NJ, but all
northish.

I wouldn't make an effort to get to any of them, but you know- now that I
think about it, I had a really lousy- I'm talking "spit it out" awful- at
the FMM. Could it have been JR's??? It was probably about five years ago.
I wonder if JR's was here by then?

It shows you how much this troll knows about anything, Karen. It appears
that he has forgotten that he is an Aussie, matey. Trolls do that.

The state of New Jersey and its cities have spent a lot of money to alter
their image. Since I live near Philadelphia and have never seen a Johnny
Rockets, I trust you on the north. In Camden they now have the battleship
New Jersey, an aquarium to rival Baltimore, and the Tweeter Center for the
performing arts, and you can go there without worrying about life, limb

and
property.

Shows how much YOU know about Hoboken, NJ.

Over the past few decades, Hoboken has turned into a wonderful,
vibrant city with great shops, restaurants, bars and an outstanding
waterfront and cultural center. The historical museum is a place many
of us in North Jersey come often for the exhibits and the lecture
series. Hoboken is a highly rated university city, as well.

The waterfront has been redeveloped, and the housing there is
topnotch. Prices are now going sky high for the older, historic
townhouses. The newer townhouses are luxurious, with a view of a
skyline that rivals anywhere in the world. All Hans would have to do
is say "yes" and I'd move there.

Johhny Rockets at the Palisades mall ( Rockland County, NY) and also at

Mohegan
Sun in CT. Personally,I like steak and shake in FLA when I visit there.

Same
kind of retro 50's diner feel but with better food. Maybe another

cruiseline
can offer a steak and shake on their ships?

Thumper,

again- it's the "slippery slope" argument. if the cruise industry cancels
all-inclusive (the stuff I pretend is free), it's going to implode.
obviously you and the incredibly HUGE amount of people (I'd say, the clear
majority) in this thread who're emotionally attached to the idea that
charging $4 to eat at JR's is wrong-wrong-wrong are the same sort (along
with me, quite frankly) who would probably give up cruising (or at least not
do it exclusively as we do) altogether if cruising ever comes to mean: stay
on a boat and be charged for everything.

frankly, if JR's is a problem for RCCL, they ought to just boot them off
their ships and install their own "free" food. Grandeur, Majesty, Vision
(and a slew of Carnival ships we've cruised upon) all had their own
burger/pizza offerings out on deck. I loved their burgers and pizza from
what I remember.

yeah- I don't think JR's is the BEST burger in town - but where I described
them as third rate, I'll back down from that- they're much closer to second
rate (although... it's been about 6 months since I ate at the Reno one so
maybe I'm giving them a little more then they deserve). I would rather eat
at JR's then say, Burger King... and maybe McDonald's (although- I still
love Mickey-Dee's fries over ANYONES!) I'll probably eat at least one
"free" burger at JR's again on a Voyager class ship (I have an op or two
coming up) and I'll come back and let you all know how it was.

Like I said, the Explorer offering wasn't impressive- but the onion rings
were very good. Anyway, I'll use the coupon they are supposedly offering
C&A members and give them another chance.

If I really liked the place, I'd probably pay the $4 to eat there- it would
still be worth it (and I'd keep eating and eating and eating just to annoy
those who put this foul plan in place).

-but-

If I really hated the idea of the surcharge (as MOST of you do) I'd voice my
concern with RCCL and I'd steadfastly refuse to eat at JR's. You're right,
Thumper (the bunny?), I don't really care whether I eat there or not- but if
this place meant that much to me, I'd buck the system and not eat at JR's on
board. In fact, if I was as emotional about it as many herein, I might even
cancel the cruise and make sure RCCL knew about this. Cancellations are
VERY effective ways of voicing your concerns with cruise operators. Go for
it!

Still, I don't cruise for the burger joints. Sorry.

Cheers,
Paul

You're using the "slippery slope" argument- but this isn't generally a

valid
one.

The mainstay of cruising is the free meals- and being an avid cruiser
(aren't we all?) I see no evidence that the cruise lines are planning to
drop all-inclusive meals (or even just all-inclusive desserts) now or at

any
time in the future. It would kill the industry. I'd probably see no

real
value in cruising if it was like going to Disney and paying an

exhorbitant
amount of money to just stay there and then having to pay for meals as

well.
I'd find some other all-inclusive vacation (heads-up Sandals, Breezes,

etc)
habit.

I'll join you in personally boycotting (and squashing) the cruise

industry
if they ever make it a non-inclusive vacation.

Charging for Johny Rockets makes it non inclusive. Why wait until
it's a $3.95 charge to "manage the demand" for lobster. It's the
principal of the thing regardless if you eat there.

Not to beat a dead horse- but I go back to the McDonald's analogy- if
McDonald's was onboard Voyager (and her sisters) from day one, there's no
way that anyone would have said- "hey, the meals there should be

free!!!"-

Why not? Johnny rockets was. besides it's not "free." It's
INCLUDED.

it just wouldn't happen. RCCL should have never put a fast food chain
(evidently not a big one- I never heard of them until the Voyager class

came
about. They still aren't here on the right coast - at least that I know

of)
on their cruise ships- they lose control of the product. If it's that

big a
deal, close down the JR's on the Voyager class ships, and just reopen it

as
a Windjammer burger/pizza shop (like those found throughout the rest of

the
industry).

Also, having worked in many shades of retail, I can tell you that most

cost
increases are driven by abuses by a small minority of customers (as in
everything else, too!).

Like those Lobster Lovers?
I'd be willing to bet that there's something other
then cruise-line greed driving decisions like the entry fee to Johnny
Rockets.

Again though- for those of you REALLY that concerned about missing out on

There you go. You don't care because you consider it 3d rate and
don't eat there.
