Two things to consider: Is your travelcard valid for trips as far out
as Heathrow? And if it is, is it really the best card for your needs?

I was thinking of a family travelcard; one day off-peak for zones 1-6
would be GBP 9.60 for two adults and two kids. We'll arrive at noon so
we can still use the card for the rest of the day and then buy a cheaper
card (zones 1-2)for the next days. The express would be GBP 41 single
fare (or GBP77 return) and a taxi probably even more so I guess we could
use the saving for lunch; can you get four burgers in London with that? ;-)

Our hotel is quite close to Paddington so taking a taxi is not helping much.

If you were travelling alone, I would suggest that a journey to a hotel near
Paddington might be a rare case in which ripOff rail (H'row Express) might
be worth the money. However, if travelling with your family, using a
travelcard is much more sensible.

I recommend the following route:
Piccadilly Line from Heathrow to Hammersmith - cross platform to District
Line
District Line to Earls Court - change on same platform (perhaps same side,
perhaps opposite side - watch indicators for destination "Edgware Road") to
District Line (Edgware Road branch)
Take District Line (Edgware Road branch) train to Paddington.
NOTE - it may just be possible that an occasional train runs direct from
Hammersmith to the Edgware Road branch. If this is the case, there would be
no need to change at Earls Court.

Ha! I didn't think of this. I assumed wrongly that we could use the same
District Line train all the way... but obviously all trains from
Hammersmith run towards Tower Hill :-( . So two changes would be needed;
anyway the change of just train, not platform, at Earls Court would
probably be no problem, outside peak hours, or? Thanks anyway for the
tip, I'll keep wondering!

You could change at Hammersmith on to the Metropolitan line
(Hammersmith and City) whence trains run direct to Paddington Main Line
station. But the H&C is a separate section at Hammersmith station so
it's probably easier to make the second (cross platform) change at
Earls Court.

I wouldn't recommend this. The H&C is actually a separate station in
Hammersmith. You would have to exit the station for the Picadilly line
and negotiate your way around Hammersmith to get to the H&C station.
Also I recall that the H&C line is quite slow(?). And isn't the H&C
terminus at Paddington right at the far end of the station from the
main entrance?

It is, but you don't have to go through the whole station to get onto
the main road. Up the stairs from the H&C, left toward the exit for the
new Paddington Basin development, then right onto a lane that takes you
the length of the station to Praed Street. There is no exit now to
Bishops Bridge, if that might have been a more convenient option, as
that bridge and the road it carries are undergoing major reconstruction.
