Default QM2

Hi
I'm new to this group so this topic may have been brought up already. I
have a ticket to sail on the new Queen Mary 2 early next month. I
wondered if anyone here has already sailed on her. I did read the write
up in the New York Times about her first crossing and there did seem to
be some problems.

Woody
I am waiting eagerly for a report on the QM2. Both the NY Times and our
local paper had a review devoted to the ship in their travel section
which praised the ship itself but proclaimed the food azs nothing to
write home about.

SUNNY........have a great cruise and let us know all about your trip
when you return

Hi Woody,
I did the maiden voyage on QM2. There were no significant problems. Here's
the highlights:

The ship layout and decor is superb. Her style is very unlike a modern day
cruise ship and much more like a grand liner of the past. Very upscale and
chic decor in public rooms and staterooms.

The Britannia grade staterooms are roomy, beautifully finshed and furnished,
and include my favorite new toy on a ship...the interactive TV. Send/receive
email, make your restaurant reservations, book shore excursions, program a
music library, watch on-demand movies, watch CNN or BBC via satellite. Very
cool.

Absolutely no complaints from my table on the food. The service in the
Britannia Restaurant was uneasy on the first couple nights, but once the staff
got their "rhythm", things ran very smoothly. Special requests at the table
were never a problem. Kings Court (buffet breakfasts and lunches) food was
better than normal buffet food, offering European and American versions of
certain foods. Had dinner at La Piazza (Kings Court turns into 4 specialy
restaurants at night...that is one of them) and it was excellent. Dinner and
lunch at Todd English (make your reservations early...there's no charge) was
superb (both food and service).

Go to the PLanetarium and see a sky show...truly a unique shipboard experience.

Shows in the Royal Court Theatre ranged from fair to excellent.

Lecture series (many topics and classes) was great.

If you like ballroom dancing, don't pass on the Queens Room. For late light
dancing, check out G32. Very "hip" nightclub experience.

In general, all the lounges were great. I think my favorite was the Commodore
Club. It's all the way forward, under the bridge, and spans the ship's width.
It's best described as "swanky" with white leather chairs and dark panelling.
Adjacent to it is the cigar bar (Churchill's) and a cozy room with a fireplace
(The Boardroom). The view over the bow is awesome. Cool jazz piano during
pre-dinner cocktails is a great way to start the evening.

Of the five pools, my favorite was the Terrace Pool on Deck 8, complete with 2
hot tubs and 4 outside hot showers. Of course, the waiters will bring your
drink right to the hot tub for you.

Do go to the Canyan Ranch SpaClub. Excellent facilities and staff.

In general, the staff was great. I met many nice people who work on the ship
and made many new friends, who I still keep in touch with.

Overall, I think Cunard got it "absolutely" right when they built this one.
She is a bit of an anomaly in the world of cookie-cutter cruise ships, which I
believe is exactly what they wanted to achieve. I had the opportunity to talk
with the principle naval architect. He is very proud of his achievement, and
rightfully so. QM2 is definitely an updated, more modern successor to QE2 in
purpose and style. It corrects the deficiencies of QE2 while preserving that
"ocean liner style".

Go and have a great time!
Regards,
Jim
