TV's, safes balconies and refrigerators. -- Charles |

What I have not seen in a while that has disappeared was the Maitre D making flaming desserts and pasta dishes by the table. -- Charles |

I doubt that everyone gets that. Must of been a suite. In the grand suite on the Granduer of the Seas we had a free botttle of wine/champaine of our choice and also a small snack every afternoon. This was because it was a suite, not from our TA. sue |

NCL still makes flaming desserts in Le Bistro (or did in December), but not tableside. The flames are still in sight, but the show happens at a fixed location, not tableside. I think it was crepes Suzette. It wasn't made by the maitre d'hotel. |

Had all the other stuff, but didn't have a refrigerator There were no refrigerators when I started cruising, the cabins were small, the passengers were older, the wait staff doted on you, there were not as many children and people could still smoke in some of the dining areas. Cruising was more expensive back in 1991, than it is now. Becca |

If you went to the dining room for breakfast or lunch, you sat at your dinner time table. Back then we had streamers for sailaway and of course a midnight buffet. Also back then formal night was a lot more formal then it is nowadays. sue |

On one of my first cruises, we had to be in the dining room on the last morning of the cruise, at 5:30am. lol Yes, my first cruise was in 1991 on the Stella Solaris. There have been many changes in cruising, both positive and negative. They seem to take more pictures, now, or maybe that is just my perception. Cruising is not as formal as it used to be. The casinos seem to be much larger. There are lots more children and not as many smokers. Becca |

wrote: The things that are no longer around from when I went on my first cruise (1950) (that I remember) are things like reserved deck chairs with blankets that the steward put out for you to wrap up in if it was cold, horse racing, canasta tournaments, first and tourist class areas (with separate pools for first class), and stewards that would draw your bath (in a bathroom that was NOT attached to your cabin and for which you had to make a reservation). They may also have had a way for you to store a steamer trunk after you unpacked it. I do not remember that we had a buffet or a safe, and we certainly did not have a TV, or a frig/minibar. I do also know that the stewards cleaned under the beds (which on that cruise were two fixed bunk beds), because on a subsequent cruise my dad had a skeleton in a box under his bed and the steward asked him about it. I doubt if the stewards now even look under the bed where we have our luggage stored. [The skeleton was his former boss] BUT also: No TV in Cabins Never had a cabin without a TV No safes in Cabins Never had a cabin without a safe We also always had a tv and a safe, although I have heard of some older ships without a safe. The oldest ship I've been on recently was the NCL Crown which is now out of the fleet. I don't remember whether it had a safe or not. I know it had a TV. Other than that, the oldest ship I've been on were the Maasdam and Statendam (1993). They had a safe and TV but not a frig. We had an outside cabin but not a balcony or anything. No Refrigerators in cabins I've had refrigerators on Celebrity and NCL but never had one on HAL Some cabins do not have refrigerators, but that is mainly on the older ships. I believe gadgetworld is playing with us or maybe he is talking about a Navy ship.lol sue My husband once took a sewing machine with him on the ship and made seat covers for his car, but that wasn't standard. |
