Did you start cruising in 1991?? Our first cruise was the Crown
Princess, Eastern Carib., Oct 1991.

If you went to the dining room for breakfast or lunch, you sat at your
dinner time table.

Back then we had streamers for sailaway and of course a midnight
buffet. Also back then formal night was a lot more formal then it is
nowadays.

Sue, you are bringing back so many fond memories. On one of my first
cruises, we had to be in the dining room on the last morning of the
cruise, at 5:30am. lol Yes, my first cruise was in 1991 on the
Stella Solaris.

There have been many changes in cruising, both positive and negative.
They seem to take more pictures, now, or maybe that is just my
perception. Cruising is not as formal as it used to be. The casinos
seem to be much larger. There are lots more children and not as many
smokers.

So you and I started cruisiing the same year.LOL

Our first cruise there was no smoking in the dining room, so as soon as
you steped out of the dining room, you were hit with a wall of smoke. I
think they even had ashtrays right outside the D.R.

I am not sure if they are taking more pictures now, we just walk past
them and don't let them take our picture anymore. We have way too many
pictures, some we bought on the cruise and even better ones that we took
or friends took.

The midnight buffet where you had to wait to take pictures of it,very
elaborate and on the "DORIC" the entire promenade deck was set up for
the midnight buffet, and it was a gourmet delight.

Cruising will never be what it was, wish for the old ways of cruising
back. Our first cruise was in 1978 and it was cheaper then than it is
now.

Sounds good to me! Then I wouldn't have to avoid them when they tried to
take my picture when I want to get off the ship, and when they came over
and tried to take our pictures during dinner.

Of course, the cruise line makes lots of money from the photographer.

Sue

This list is historical.

Yes ships have improved much over the years, but in order to really
appreciate all the modern improvements, we have to know, what existed
before!

I go back with Doug Ward over thirty years of friendship and I respect
his viewpoint and knowledge very much.

Charles has a good handle on this subject!

I thought the photographers were independent contractors - they pay
the cruise line to let them set up shop.

Hi All,

It was 50 years ago this June that we drove to NYC in my VW Bug for our
first cruise, the Furness Line Queen of Bermuda, a seven day round trip to
Bermuda. We heard the call "All ashore that's going ashore" over the PA and
went up on deck to wave goodbye as guests left the ship. Thousands of
streamers were thrown over the rail, then cleaned up by crewmen and men on
shore. The teak decks, rails and brass trim gleamed in the sun. Our cabin
had bunk beds and a functioning porthole, no TV, no fridge, no safe, no
balcony, no door lock, just a "do not disturb" sign. There was a buzzer
device to call the steward. Electric outlets were European/style. All
meals at our assigned table with our regular waiter, each dinner formal or
semi formal. The crew was all English, our waiter a Cockney. There was a
pool, there was not a casino. We cruised to Bermuda, stayed there three
days, cruised back to NYC and went to a Yankee game to see Mickey Mantle.
We have been hooked on cruising ever since. Oh, by the way, our VW needed
less than $12.00 for gas, round trip from Indiana. The cruise was about
$200-$250 per person.

Many of those items from our first cruise have disappeared, but we have not
lost any of the fun. There just is not a better vacation than a cruise.
Enjoy.

Harry Cooper
