From UK

If you don't have an ID-card (which I assume you don't have if you're
british) then you need a passport, yes.

No. Merely a picture ID.

From UK, every British citizen needs a passport. If you are a national of EU
countries with national identity card (that excludes UK and Ireland), you
can travel on that as well. You won't be allowed to board the
train/ferry/Eurotunnel shuttle/plane without acceptable document.

Well, no. They need a picture ID.

It's only because they don't have another one that they end up needing a
passport... Self-inflicted I guess.

Can a French national travel to UK with a driving licence (with photo) but
no carte disentitle? Can a German travel to Austria/Italy with driving
licence but no Personalises (regardless of no border control)?

No. (by the way it is a Carte d'Identite (+ accent))

Personalausweis. No, officially he can't.

Not true, devil. A driver's license, for instance, is perfectly valid as ID
at my local bank or post office, but when I go to Belgium (or any other EU
country) I need a ID card or passport.
So "any" picture ID is not good enough to cross a border within Europe. You
need the "official" national ID card or a passport.

I cannot think of a single Airline or Ferry co that will let a UK citizen
travel abroad without a valid UK passport.
