What has happened to this site!
Used to visit this site often as I love to travel throughout Latin
America. Now it's nothing but travel booking sites and p*&^n adds. Where is the site monitor? Is there a new site for those who just want to exchange information? |

This is not a "site", it's a USENET newsgroup. There's no hall monitor here. Is there a new site for those who just want to exchange information? Abandon googlegroups. Subscribe to a real news service. You'll find a good free service he http://www.motzarella.org/ Use a real news client with a decent filter. Is there a new site for those who just want to exchange information? Good question. I have found this to be true across a wide spectrum of Google Usenet Groups. During the election, in discussion groups on fly fishing or wood working, where one might expect calm, friendly sharing of the joys of one's hobby, the boards instead were full of vitriolic attacks on the candidates and one another. There is a Gresham's Law that set in as bad discussion drives out good. These discussion groups can be a valuable and fun way to share information and participate in a community of shared interests. I remember discussion groups (under Deja Vu?) where one did have monitors and if you went off topic you were banned from the board. I bet Google could make a similar aggangement for these sites. I'd like to see some effort to save these groups from the garbage that fills the internet these days. --Don |

I'd like to see some effort to save these groups from the garbage that fills the internet these days. Some of you seen to be having a problem grasping what is going on here. This is not a Googlegroup. This is a Usenet newsgroup, of which there are tens of thouands. Usenet has been around for decades, well before the existence of either the Web or Google. "Googlegroups" is just Google's way of connecting you to Usenet, and Google has no control whatsoever over the content of the postings to Usenet (although, strictly speaking, it could monitor postings being made by Googlegroup users). There are Usenet newgroups that are moderated, and all psoting go through desiganted moderators who basically censor them to ensure relevant content and and lack of vituperativeness. But the vast majority of newsgroups are unmoderated. The moderated newsgroups tend to be a bit dull and boring, but usually do have good information about a subject, the postings haveing been vetted to assure it. The vast majority of newsgroups are unmoderated and are more ree-wheeling. Postings sometimes veer off topic, and some of the off-topic threads are the most interesting. It's considered bad form to make an off-topic post de novo, but threads sometimes take a turn off-topic simply by the fact that so many psots become peripheral to the main topic. There are a lot of idiots posting things for sale, or slamming a politician in a non-political newsgroup and a lot of posters simply appear to be raving mad. Those of us who read Usenet with well-designed software have built-in ways of avoiding these posters, most notably killfiles; unfortunately, Google does not have well-designed software for reading Usenet (which it calls Googlegroups). -- ************* DAVE HATUNEN ) ************* * Tucson Arizona, out where the cacti grow * * My typos & mispellings are intentional copyright traps * |

wrote: I have found this to be true across a wide spectrum of Google Usenet Groups. Just adding to the chorus. There is no such thing as Google Usenet Groups. However, there are some usenet groups which are available via Google. Usenet was available via newsreaders before Google existed and continues to be. Many usenet groups are un-moderated apart from the restrictions of their charters. In fact the majority of those I use are un-moderated. Further, getting Isps to enforce charter restrictions and terms-of-service vioatlions is a hit-and-miss affair and seems to be less and less important to many ISPs. So, in effect, it is anarchy. Get a decent newsreader, learn to use killfiles and similar screening techniques, and you can get a lot of good info off the net. Or, of course, you can continue to struggle through on Google and complain about the spammers, kooks, twits and those who complain about the lack of moderation...now how do I design a filter for that...hmmm Cheers, Alan, Australia -- http://loraltravel.blogspot.com Latest: Two Indian Hotels: to Sleep, Perchance... |

Should we _not_ complain about spam and postings by nutters? Here is some information that may help in screening out some of the junk from the FAQ page http://groups.google.com/support/bin...53&ctx=sibling : ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How can I report cases of Usenet abuse from people posting though Google Groups? To report cases of Usenet abuse, click the More options link at the top of the message and select Report this message. On the report page, describe why you think the post is abusive. Please be aware that, while we understand how annoying off-topic posts can be, Google doesn't regularly monitor or censor postings sent to Google Groups. However, we do try to prevent wide-scale spam and other forms of Usenet abuse, most notably involving numerous repeat offenses or the posting of someone's personal information (such as credit card or social security numbers). We'll use all of the information we receive regarding abuse and spam to make large-scale changes to fight all types of abuse. In Google Groups discussion groups (not Usenet newsgroups), you can also ask the owner or moderator to remove a post. For more information, please read our Terms of Service. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
