... looking for better food.

My mother was a lost twin of yours - I simply learned to cook.

I can't say my mother was a "bad" cook, but she never used anything more
adventurous that salt, pepper and onion in her "cuisine" - it was I who
began experimenting with herbs, once I took an interest in preparing as
well as eating food. (And converted her to their use, in the process.)

Hi,

I would guess that most (50%+1) households have at least 1 firearm...

and absolutely the average number of firearms per household is greater
than 1.

While there are alot of guns in the USA for hunting and target shooting
I'm like you. I don't know a single family member, co-worker or friend
who owns a gun. The belief of some that most in the USA have a gun is
absurd.

but you can use a gun for self defense without firing a shot.

in fact most uses of firearms for self defense don't involve firing a
single shot.

all these things are for killing people, don't tell me the guns
are for hunting or sport, the gun nuts here have made it
perfectly clear what they are for.

So more rounds are fired at people than anything else? Seems you're a
bit confused.

Where did I claim that? You cant alter the things the gun nuts
have already said, "guns for self defence".

There was this (propagandist) figure somewhere in the Finnish media a few
years back that there are some 200 million hand guns in the US American
households. Perhaps guns are almost solely owned by figures like David
Koresh and Timothy McVeigh.

There are alot of people that hunt, I just don't know any myself.
However, it appears that many who do own guns own several of them.

Hi,

I remember back in the 80s in Idaho I was waiting to pay my check at a
small diner... and a local rancher-woman was ahead of me in line
chatting with the cashier while she got her money out of her purse...
but she had to find the wallet... and amoung other things that came out
was a large revolver...loaded... nobody thought much of it... bear country.

A great deal depends on where you are; you will find more gun
ownership by ordinary people away from major urban centers,
hunting weapons especially.

Ah, ya...that is what I am saying. Alot of people own guns and do not
hunt with them, nor have them for self defence. I'll let ya ponder on
that awhile.

Oh, I see - they provide a prop for the "macho" fantasies that impotent
U.S. males indulge in!

well in the US we have a "god given" Right to Keep and Bear Arms as part
of the militia (the armed citizenry) for the purpose of keeping the
federal government in check.

"God given"? Just because something used to be right does not
mean it continues to be. I find it disturbing how often US people
refer to the constitution rather than logic.

No, it means that criminals don't care about any laws. If they want the
guns, they will get them. They are illegal in Mexico yet gun crime is
high there.

It is an undisputable fact that it is the availability of the guns
that creates the violence where guns are present. There are for
incatnce many times as probable to be shot on the street a normal day
in New York City, than it was on the most troublesome period of the
civil war in Northern Ireland. The reason why people get killed, is
because of the wrong (read: insane) weapon policy in the US - period
