A useful website for finding out station facilities in France is http://www.gares-en-mouvement.com/ but it doesn't include Sens, as far as I can tell. I've been at a few smaller train stations recently in France which didn't have the service. I don't think the sncf website is particularly helpful for finding out this information- and they have an odd sense of humour in displaying a place on their front page (at the moment) which isn't accessible by train... for those travelling by car on the auto route? -- Martin |

That's certainly the meaning I've always assumed! Left is the past tense of leave. It's a place to leave your luggage. Well, yes. But that can be done intentionally and unintentionally. For instance, someone may be upset and say something like: "Aargh! I left my luggage in that taxi!", pointing at a cab's red lights one hunderd meters away. This person may call the taxi company's back office in the evening and ask if his bags have been dropped at 'left luggage' by the driver. Is there a bagage check in Sens?
"Martin":
So explain what "check" [has] to do with left luggage, hats and rain. In North America the act of leaving something and being given a ticket to reclaim it is called checking it, and the ticket is a check (often qualified by the type of object -- baggage check, hat check, coat check, laundry check). When traveling by air (and sometimes also by train) you may have "checked baggage" and "carry-on baggage". If you go to a baseball game and it's canceled due to weather, you turn in your ticket stub for compensation in the form of admission to a future game. (Or so I hear; I'm not a baseball fan.) In this role the stub is like a baggage check because you exchange it for an item of value, and is called a raincheck. (A further use of "raincheck" is as a metaphor in social situations: it refers to an agreement to do something on a later date than was first suggested. "Yes, I'd like to see that movie with you, but I'm busy tomorrow; can I take a raincheck?") -- Mark Brader "People with whole brains, however, dispute Toronto this claim, and are generally more articulate in expressing their views." -- Gary Larson My text in this article is in the public domain. |

[referring to spectators, who couldn't really tell whether a runner was out or not, but at the same time boo the umpire because the call went against their own guess, which is usually in favor of the team they're rooting for] -- Erick |
