Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall is on the site of the former presidential
office of Sun Yat-Sen when he took the post of the provisional president of Guangzhou City in 1912. In order to commemorate the Chinese revolutionary leader and statesman who is considered by many to be the 'Father of Modern China', the people of Guangzhou and overseas Chinese raised money and established this Hall which was completed in 1931. The Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall is a magnificent octagonal palace-style building, which appears solemn and traditional. It rockets up to about 50 meters (about 164 feet) in height and is seen as classical among the architecture of modern Guangzhou City. Inside the hall there is a round two-storied auditorium. The designer using a combined theory of construction and mechanics made the space span about 70 meters (about 230 feet), it stands without a single pillar using only the walls around it for support and appears very grand. Tourists also can visit an exhibition hall which presents the life story of Sun Yat-Sen. Since its opening, the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall has become a famous landmark. Now it is an essential site and an architectural symbol of Guangzhou City. |
