We are supposed to go on the Dawn Princess from San Francisco to New
York. According to the Princess propaganda, this cruise will have an
"Aussie flavor". Besides using Australian dollars as the onboard
currency, what does an "Aussie flavor" entail?

Be very afraid...

They probably mean that since Dawn Princess is now home ported in
Australia and geared to the Australian market, to expect a lot of
Australian passengers on board.

Dawn Princess still has the same Princess menus while based in
Australia - including the dry, burnt bacon that Aussies can't stand.
They still call the main meal an entree - confusing the heck out of
Aussie passengers.

There is a higher ratio of Aussie wines and beers, but still a wide
US/international range as well.

The main Australian flavour (Aussie spelling) is that parts of the
ship are still awake after midnight. Being a world cruise, or long
segments, the usual Aussie party mood will be mostly missing.

I have chatted to dozens of US cruisers who have come to Australia to
cruise, and they love the laid back onboard atmosphere.

Some specifics:
- Ultimate Balcony Breakfast is available in all cabins (has been
renamed Champagne Breakfast)
- Cabins have one AU socket and one US one. Buy an Aussie adaptor if
you want to use both sockets
- Autotips are $AU12 per passenger 13yrs + (lower than the US)
- Drink service charges are only 10% (lower than the US)
- Australian $1 coins in the laundry
- Australian pokies in the casino
- Service staff are mostly a mix of Thai, Phillipino, Indian and
European
- Dawn Princess came out of drydock on Saturday, and has a new MUTS
screen, Sanctuary, new carpets - mattresses - bed linen - upholstery.

Hope this helps - I am happy to help with any specifics.

Note that the Australian voltage is 240V

- Australian pokies in the casino

Much better than the boring American ones. :-)

Same issues and problems as using Canadian electricity, just double the
amount.

Americans worry whether the rest of the world
considers us dumb, so we go to the polls and
remove all doubt.

Roo Burgers, Aboriginal Grub Salad with real Grubs, and a floor show of
Aussie native dances accompanied by a didgeridoo. The film of the week,
that movie where Meryl Streep using an impeccable Aussie accent
exclaims: " A dingo ate my baby!" Heard everywhere on the pa system
"Tie me kangaroo down sport" and "Waltzing Matilda". Sea crock
wrestling in the main pool at 1400 hrs, swim at your own risk.
