"Toxic ship" cleared for breaking at Indian yard
To Whom It May Concern:
We came across this information in the trades and thought it would be of interest to this newsgroup as well. Happy sailing, John Sisker, SHIP-TO-SHORE CRUISE AGENCY® (714) 536-3850 or toll free at (800) 724-6644 & (pagoo ID: 714.536.3850) www.shiptoshorecruise.com AHMEDABAD, India, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Indian experts have given the go ahead for the scrapping of a controversial cruise liner which environmentalists say contains toxic material harmful to ship-breakers, officials said on Wednesday. Greenpeace and other groups say the 46,000-tonne Norwegian cruise liner Blue Lady, which anchored in June off the Alang ship-breaking yard in the western state of Gujarat, contains more than 900 tonnes of asbestos which would put the health of workers at risk. India's Supreme Court had allowed the ship to enter Indian waters but put on hold its dismantling, pending a report by an expert panel on the quantum of toxic wastes on board. Two senior officials, who requested anonymity, told Reuters the panel has allowed the ship to be broken. "The Blue Lady will enter Alang," one of them said. "It will be dismantled soon." Greenpeace confirmed the panel has given the green signal for the ship to be broken but called the decision "illegal". "We know the expert panel has found more than 1,000 tonnes of banned pollutants on the ship," Ramapati Kumar of the group told Reuters. "How can they allow the ship to be broken? We will expose them." In February, the French government recalled former aircraft carrier Clemenceau after a lengthy campaign by Greenpeace, which said the ship carried toxic waste. A Greenpeace report published in December said thousands of workers in the ship-breaking industry in countries such as India, China and Pakistan had probably died over the past two decades in accidents or due to exposure to toxic waste. "Toxic ship" cleared for breaking at Indian yard
Uh John, the ship is not 'named' the "Blue Lady". Rather that is the
nickname of the SS Norway which was the SS France before that. The SS Norway has been awaiting clearance from the Indian Gov, (which really could care less about the environment or health issues, especially for that area or those workers), to be scrapped. As a clarification, "Blue Lady" is the official name of the Norway at this time. "Blue Lady" is the name used in all of the India court documents and registered officially. My original post on 8/2 linked to the India news article confirms this. Best regards, Ray LIGHTHOUSE TRAVEL 800-719-9917 or 805-566-3905 http://www.lighthousetravel.com -- |

The France was renamed the Norway when it was purchased by NCL (or, I believe, the predecessor by name) and then renamed the Blue Lady when NCL/Star sold it. -- dillon How much power does it take to run a server farm? Gallows humor. Wouldn’t SS Gillette Razor Blades be more accurate. I
haven’t seen a steel Gillette razor in years. NWLB wrote: In any case, it is now going to be called SS Gillette Razor. NWLB ************** http://www.RCIfan.com |
