Ryanair to abolish check-in desks

My latest jaunt was by Swiss International from London City. I can recommend London City over the others for a start. My flight took me straight into a main airport and not one 100 miles away.We thus saved on transport costs at the other end, We had an allocated seat and refreshments were served en route. It cost us just over £30 extra. If that was Easyjet to Geneva it would double the cost of the flight! My calculation was based on RyanAir Stanstead to Basle which I estimated would cost us both ~£200 return. We never take early or late flights to Europe. I wanted to be in Zurich. I cannot get from Basle to Zurich for nothing especially in these straitened times. I was able to get London to Zurich and back for £230 Especially taking into account all the other advantages associated with travelling scheduled vis a vis Ryanair I don't think I got too bad a deal. |

Interesting you should ask that, as I was about to remark that the current rules disallow online check-in for people without EU [1] passports. This is true but currently this is enforced via a check-box on the web form which someone might accidentally or deliberately check. |

Sun, 22 Feb 2009, MC remarked: If a passenger does not have the appropriate documentation he will not be boarded that much is true. Exactly so. It is that documentation check which will become more "interesting" after Ryanair abolishes check-in desks. Will be done at the gate. I suspect that people with a "non EU/EAA/Swiss" passport will be asked to use the bag drop "not a check-in desk honest guv". -- Roland Perry |

Roland Perry wrote: In message , at 13:17:32 on Sat, 21 Feb 2009, Lord Truscott of Brownenvelope remarked: The carrier said that 75% of its passengers already checked in online. That's fine, as long as you can check in well in advance. Easyjet seem to allow you to check in as soon as you book, but BMI-Baby only 48hrs in advance (until recently it was just 24hrs). The latter is extremely impractical if you are doing a return trip. The other problem with Ryanair is that you can't check-in on-line if someone else is buying the ticket. At least you couldn't last year. -- Graeme Wall This address not read, substitute trains for rail Transport Miscellany at www.greywall.demon.co.uk/rail |

It's the only check against multiple boarding passes being printed and used on that flight. Apart from that bit at security where they scan your boarding pass and your name pops up on their screen. Ian |

Ryanair to abolish check-in desks
In message , at 12:47:35 on Sun, 22 Feb
2009, Roland Perry remarked: I'll report back on my Easyjet flight today. Last week's Ryanair flight was about 80% full (as per their average loading) and there was plenty of room in the overheads, and almost nothing under any seats. [iirc the official maximum size of a carry-on is also supposed to fit under a seat, although that won't leave much room for feet.] I obviously looked like a soft target because I was swooped upon while waiting at the gate by a 'supervisor' who said I would have to check one of my bags (rollerbag or laptop) as there was a limit of one. "You agreed the terms and Conditions" he said. A few other people had more than one carryon and weren't challenged. So I packed the laptop bag inside the rollerbag, and as I boarded he gave me a knowing smile. On the plane I had a row of three seats to myself, and overall the plane was just over half full (but I knew this was likely, based on the price being charged a month ago). -- Roland Perry |

, at 06:24:07 on Sun, 22 Feb 2009, Neil Williams remarked: Came back from Berlin on a very new Ryanair plane last week (first time I've flown with them in perhaps 15 years) and was very impressed at the size of the luggage bins (much larger than normal I thought they were standard 737-800s (on which the bins are slightly larger than the -300/400/500 series). Have they perhaps specified a larger-bin variant for their newest planes, I wonder? I probably meant "larger than an airbus", but it was an -800. -- Roland Perry |

This is true but currently this is enforced via a check-box on the web form which someone might accidentally or deliberately check. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "enforced", or what you are getting at with accidental vs deliberate. I'm pretty sure that if you arrived at the gate and they saw your Outer Mongolian passport for the first time, you would not be getting on the plane. -- Roland Perry |
