ANA captain lands airliner in Singapore single-handedly

An All Nippon Airways (ANA) captain was forced to land his jet by
himself at Singapore airport last Sunday after the co-pilot fell ill,
the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry said Wednesday.

The airline reported the trouble to its government regulator Tuesday.
The ministry's Aircraft and Railway Accident Investigation Committee
launched a probe after concluding that it falls under a serious
incident under the Civil Aviation Law.

ANA Flight 901 took off from Narita Airport in the outskirts of Tokyo
for Singapore at 4:38 p.m., Sunday, with 186 passengers and
crewmembers aboard, ministry officials said. At around 11 p.m., less
than an hour before landing at Singapore, the 43-year-old co-pilot
complained of a stomachache while the aircraft was cruising.

The 55-year-old captain told the co-pilot to lie down and rest, and
landed the aircraft -- a Boeing 777-200 -- at Changi Airport in
Singapore on his own at 11:54 p.m. The captain was forced to cover the
duties that are usually done by a co-pilot.

Upon arrival at Singapore, the co-pilot was rushed to hospital where
he was diagnosed as suffering from acute pancreatitis. His illness is
not life-threatening.

After coming back to Japan, the captain reported the incident to the
company. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, March 10, 2004)

No problem at all. On Chango they land on ILS CAT III (Instrument Landing
System). The pilot is sitting in his chair and is doing almost nothing
while the ILS-computer lands the plane.

Hasn't All Nippon Airways heard of telephone/fax/e-mail/telex/AFTN to notify
HQ. If it was classed as a serious incident, then why was it not reported to
HQ and the GoJ-MLIT sooner? Particularly when SQ (a partner airline within
the Star Alliance) is headquarted in SIN.
