I was reading the current version of Wired this week. Seems the a/c
needs to get up to a speed of 180 knots ir mph (can't remember which)
for takeoff so a tail strike doesn't occur. Smething to do with the 12m
fuselage stretch over the A340-300, I guess.

The spec's I found for the A340 family don't show any difference in
take-off critical speeds for the various versions. And, it is 180 mph
not Knots.

However, the A340-600 does have additional features to decrease the
probability of tail strike on both take-off and landing due to the
long fuselage that the shorter members of the family don't have. An
additional pitch indicator and a force feedback on the flight controls
to indicate danger of tail strike conditions.

777-300ER has anti- tailstriek built into the FBW system. Apparently
the a/c will not tail strike no matter how hard you pull back the yoke.
Boeing claims that's good for an extra 2-5 tons payload.

I remember watching that PBS series on building the triple-seven. On one of
the flight tests they bolted huge chuncks of wood to the tail and then
"scraped" it down the runway. V. impressive.
