Songs for Europe Sun 25/03/07 - Stars of Europe, a concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the setting up of what is now known as the European Union, was watched by around 30,000 people in Brussels on Saturday evening. The concert featured musicians from across Europe. It was followed by a light show and an impressive firework display, which one of the evening's two hosts Bart Peeters dedicated to King Albert of the Belgians. Cerrone's piece 'Supernature' played as the fireworks filled the skies around one of Brussels' most famous landmarks, the Atomium. (VRT) Bart Peeters told the crowd that he knew that our King enjoys firework displays "that's why we're dedicating this display to the King of Europe", the musician and VRT presenter added. This year's Belgian entry for the Eurovision song contest, the Liège funk band The KMG's and last year's entry, the Flemish pop singer Kate Ryan, both strutted their stuff in front on an enthusiastic crowd. Almost the entire royal family was in attendance with only Prince Laurent being nowhere to be seen. King Albert especially enjoyed the performance by the Greek singer Nana Mouskouri. Concert live on TV The concert started just after 8:30pm with a performance by the Italian singer Zucchero, who got the show on the road with his hit song "Baila Morena" The show was presented by the VRT's Bart Peeters and Fabienne Vande Meerssche from the Francophone public broadcaster RTBF. King Albert and Queen Paola arrived later in the evening, after having attended a gala diner. Meanwhile, Queen Fabiola and her entourage enjoyed the concert from the comfort of the V.I.P lounge under the Atomium. Artists from across Europe Artists from across Europe rehearsed hard all day for the concert that was not only broadcast here in Belgium, but also in 40 other European countries. The girls from the world-famous Scala Choir performed, as did groups such as Hooverphonic, the Gypsy Kings and the Scorpions. The Flemish singers Helmut Lotti and Axelle Red also sung for Europe. The show came to an end at about 11:45pm. |
