London Tube question
Hello,
I'm going to book my hotel in London-Barking area (served by "Hammersmith&City" and "District" lines). Are these tube lines operating even on Saturday (late) night and Sunday (early) morning? What time is the last train on Sat-night at Victoria heading to Barking? And the first train on Sun-morning for the inverse route? Or, shoud I better to find where to sleep somewhere else? :-P Thanks! |

On the other hand its cheaper, close enough to be handy and its 'real' London not the west end or city. Keith |

Nope, tube trains in London don't run at night. They stop in the evening around 11:30. If you're out after that you'll have to take a taxi or bus (or walk). The night buses are very rare (mostly hourly, it always seems) so make sure you've got enough warm clothing to survive a good long stand on a windy corner. miguel -- See the world from your web browser: http://travel.u.nu/ |

It depends entirely on where you're going. Barking has a service almost every 15 minutes. The night buses go almost everywhere the tube does, just on a reduced schedule- if you plan in advance it's not a big deal, really. When I lived in London, it was 10 minutes on a weekend night to where I lived, 20 minutes on a week night. That said, I'm reading between the lines that the poster is staying in Barking because it's cheaper than a lot of central London. Well, it is, but I don't think it's worth it. If the poster is staying at something like the Barking Formule 1, then there is quite a hike to the hotel from the station. Frankly, you could get something for a few pounds more at an easier to reach location. David -- David Horne- website under re-construction davidhorne (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk |

So, is that hotel not-so-easy-to-reach from the tube? Any bus line links the tube to the hotel? How long it takes by feet? What is your suggestion about a better located value4money hotel? Thanks! |

Hello David! Yes, you read beetween the lines very well! :-) When I said Barking, I meant F1 hotel. Ah- bingo. So, is that hotel not-so-easy-to-reach from the tube? Any bus line links the tube to the hotel? How long it takes by feet? By foot- it's a 10 minute walk. That, by itself isn't a bid deal. More, just that the tube to Barking can take a while, and I think you'll find it tedious when you add on the walk. There is a much faster train service to Fenchurch Street, but that may not be so useful. I suppose the main question is where you want to be in London, and what the main purpose of your visit is. What is your suggestion about a better located value4money hotel? Thanks! There are fairly decent hotels in the Hammersmith area, which have ensuite, breakfast etc. I stayed at the following one, which I found fine, for £45 http://www.adria-hotel.activehotels.com/ As you mention needing to be at Victoria, you might want to consider staying there too. You won't get the same value for money, though- but you should be able to get a room for about £50. It might depend a little on how long your visit is. IIRC, the Formule 1 is about £38. Now, if that is for two people, then it's almost unbeatable value, and you _do_ know what you'll get- in terms of cleanliness, facilities. (No ensuites, but plenty of auto-cleaning toilets and showers.) Do check the internet though- you will be surprised at some of the deals you can get. Earls Court is another area you might want to try. There's nothing _wrong_ with Barking, and you'll see a more everyday side of London life if you stay there. But, I think you might find it a bit of a trek. David -- David Horne- website under re-construction davidhorne (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk |
