Mt Etna, Sicily
Fantastic trip a couple of weeks ago to Sicilian volcanoes with
Explore Worldwide. We had a whole day trekking over Etna summit and down to view the current eruption in the Valle del Bove - what an experience! I would highly recommend the trip. Locally, it's organised by Etna Trekking of Linguaglossa - thanks to them for a great week. www.etnatrekking.com for local details. also Some pictures of the Etna traverse on my Webshots site http://community.webshots.com/user/doc_paul under the title "Mt Etna, Sicily" This is not a promotion - just wanted to show you something I really enjoyed! (see http://buten.net/max/sicily/60_etna/30Busses0356.html) - Max Hi Max - yes there was a big eruption on the eastern (?NE) flank in 2002, when more than 20 vents appeared along a fissure over a period of a few hours. The local tour company people from Etna Trekking all come from that area, around Linguaglossa, so they describe it with great vividness! The first warning was about 5 hours of earthquakes one night, then the vents appeared, and spewed out lava all over the ski area at Piano Provenzana, effectively destroying it. Sapienza I think is where we finished our traverse from north to south, and they have now rebuilt the cable car. Plenty of people were catching the cable car, then walking over to the edge of the Valle del Bove to see the lava flow. It was said it's the first time for 5 years that there has been a flow on Etna that's benign enough for the tourists to approach - so we were very lucky! Paul Leigh Lancs UK |
