Default Grand Cayman

Would be interested in hearing comments about a vacation to Grand Cayman.
We are looking for a vacation to relax, snorkel, etc. Been there, done that
with Cancun. We have looked at several options ranging from Aruba to Mexico
to Belize to Jamaica. Dont want to spend a fortune but would like to have a
good time. Would be flying out of Austin or San Antonio, looking to spend
$2K or so.

Grand Cayman is terribly expensive. Two grand? Where ya gonna eat?
Check out Costa Rica, West Coast. Snorkeling's not the best, but there's
rainforest, volcano's, monkeys, beauty and fantastic people. Yeah, I know
it isn't the Carribean, so I probably should not have brought it up. But it
is fantastic, and we've been ALL over the Carribbean.

Grand Cayman is expensive. Consider Roatan as an option. You will enjoy
the snorkeling and the beaches are beautiful.

I have been there 4 times and I enjoyed it. Very quiet, nice beach,
good food, the diving and the snorkeling was good.

Paya Bay Resort is very peaceful and quiet. I stayed there because I am
a nudist and they have a private beach. If you are not into that, I am
not sure you would enjoy it. There is nothing to do there. It is popular
with honeymooners, from what I hear. This resort only has 7 rooms. The
food was very good.

This place is inexpensive. I do not know much about it, since I did not
stay there.

I took my family to Grand Cayman in July 2004. We stayed at the Cayman
Comfort Suites, which was a nice value motel. Our two children with us, so
we stayed in a suite which had two private bedrooms and a fold-out sofa in
the living room. The room had a kitchenette area with refrig, microwave,
stove, dishwasher, silverware, and cupboards. Also, the Comfort Suites had
a wonderful free breakfast buffet. So, everyday, we ate breakfast for free
and went to the supermarket (Kirk's) and bought lunch things, snacks, and
drinks, so lunch didn't cost much. Dinner, we went out, and it was
expensive, but not as expensive as buying three meals a day.

The pool at the motel was nice, but the beach is a public beach, not a motel
private beach, but it was nice, too. Good snorkling right there with plenty
of fish and stingrays close to shore. There is a Don Foster Dive Shop right
on grounds and they set me up two scuba diving excursions and treated me
well. I am sure they could direct you to snorkling spots, too.

All told, we had a wonderful family vacation. Hope this helps you.

You may want to take a look at the trip report I did a little over 2 years
ago of our trip to Grand Cayman. To to my personal web site at
www.hammocktree.org/ms/trips.html and scroll down to:
Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands Jan 2003

We stayed at what was then a Holiday Inn. I believe it is now a
Marriott Courtyard.

Remember there may still be some damage evident from the hurricane(s)
last fall.

You can get all that and more on the island of Dominica. The air is
going to be pricey but once you get there everything else will be
reasonable. Plus you can see the "Boiling Lake" the island's geothermal
caldera or trek to any one of over 100 waterfalls.

Depending on conditions you can ferry to Montserrat via another island
(Martinique ?) to view the volcano from a safe distance. But this is
not a typical tourist stop, due to the devastation the island has
experienced there aren't many tourist facilities available. Advance
contact of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory http://www.mvo.ms/ is
required.
