I've gotten tired of being hustled every time I go to a beach in the

standing there trying to sell you something when all you want to do is
read your book or take a snooze? I would rather not have a gated beach
and I will happily spend all my money on tourist junk but sometimes I
just want peace and quiet without someone standing over me going 'lady,
lady, buy a necklace' when I am sound asleep - some of these people
are pretty agressive. (I'm not foolish enough to sleep on a beach
without someone I know watching out for me).

You will not be hustled at the beaches on St. John, US Virgin Islands.
It is a national park. No one coming around selling anything. Also I
have never been bothered at Horseshoe Beach on Bermuda.

While I have not been there, it is my understanding that this does not happen
on the north shores of Tortola and for sure on the island of Anegada (Both
part of the BVIs). Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Let me guess .... Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Domrep,
Jamaica, parts St. Lucia, Barbados and Antigua. How about BVI, Grenada,
Turks & Caicos, Anguilla, Dominica, Bonaire, St. Barts, St. Vincent &
The Grenadines, most of USVI (exc. STT), large parts of Barbados, St.
Lucia and Antigua. I guess there are many more beaches where you will
not have a problem than where you _will_ have a problem. If you go where
everyone else goes, you have to expect the effect of market forces. And
if you think it's different in other parts of the world where tourism is
one of the key earners of foreign exchange - think again.

Even in Jamaica - a few years ago just a few miles outside Ocho Rios there
was a lovely public beach with pink coral sand without a single vendor for
the entire week I was staying with my aunt. I said was because there was
talk about it becoming a private beach but from the look of the adjointing
properties rocky with lots of sea urchins) beach vendors will have a hard
time getting in unless they pay too.

So if anyone is going to or by Harmony Hall Museum, could you look towards
the ocean side about half a mile closer to Ocho Rios and tell me the status
of the beach there?

We just returned from 2 weeks in Manuel Antonio and believe me on the
beach we were continually bothered by people selling pottery and kids
begging for money.

Anybody want to add to the list?

Dickenson Bay is the only one on your list I've been too, and certainly do not
consider it anything special.... Nice, but nothing special.

I agree. I think all of the islands on Antigua are overrated.

I'm late to this thread, as I'm just back from 16 days in the VI*. My
observation on the list is that it has a strong component of popularity,
and is not solely based on being the widest, or longest, or prettiest that
exists, if you include every remote beach existing in the Caribbean. The
lack of any beach on Anguilla, Barbuda or T&C points this out.

Grace bay, Turks & Cacios is much nicer

I'm leaning to T&C for next year. Unless a friend goes to Trinidad's
Carnival and I make it my T&T year.

* Links to trip journal and pictures will eventually be posted. There are
pictures of lots and lots of beaches.

There are no vendors on those beaches. The reason? There are no people, or
only a few. And no facilities either. In the next few weeks I'll get you
pictures for many of these beaches.

It really gets down to what are you looking for in a beach? Size? People or
no people? Water calmness? Shallow for a long ways out? Good snorkeling?
Powdery sand? Sand color? A grove of palm trees just behind the beach? Lack
of nature's debris? Facilities? Uniqueness?
