Default smokers revenge

Charles... I didn't like the smoke coming from someone else's cigarette
even when I used to smoke. However, I feel many are caught up in a
media-fired mass hysteria over something which may in time turn out to
be a non-issue. Personally, I am more concerned over some of the food
additives IE: hormones, antibiotics etc. ...But I'm not going to start
eating beansprouts and broccoli as a result. ...Jon

I remember when the deepest questions here had to do with whether the
lobster tails were mushy or firm, or whether towels were provided at the
pools or one had to bring them from their cabins.

The creature in Lord of the Rings who has 2 personalities.

Gollum was called Smegol prior to killing his friend Deagol to take the
ring. I'm not sure if he had the second personality back then, but later,
after the ring gave him long life, but changed him physically, he became
known as Gollum. This from a sound that he made - kind of like a choking
sound which sounds like "gollum".

Gollum was the evil personality. Smegol the more timid personality.
Gollum/Smegol talked to himself while looking at his reflection in water.
Gollum was the water reflection.

Gollum was very popular in the movies. And the water reflection scenes were
key scenes in several parts of the movies.

Bouncing from one personality to another... this to the comment about being
able to bounce between educated college professor vs. inner city street
"yoot" and Howie saying he can be almost anyone he wants to be.

Thank you for an excellent illuminating explanation, Tom, and to adding
to my general education.

You never read Tolkien when you were young? He was an Oxford professor and
made the whole thing up, including the languages. He was quite brilliant.

I could suggest watching the 3 movies... but the books are so much better.
The imaginary world of Tolkien (Middle Earth) with Elves, Dwarves, Orcs,
Dragons that talk and sleep on gold, Wizards, Nazgul/RingWraiths, Eagles,
Hobbits (halflings - the short people), Ents (tree herders), a Balrog,
Gollum, and of course Men. Plus the Dark Lord Sauron.

Places like the Shire (where the hobbits live), Rivendell (where the Elves
live), the Mines of Moria (where the dwarves once mined for Methril),
Lothlorean where the Elf Queen lives, Fanghorn Forrest (where the Ents
live), Rohan, Isengard, Gondor and Mordor.

Between the 3 books (all part of 1 long story), it's a good 2 months worth
of reading. Made even better with a detailed map. Then there's the books
The Hobbit, The Silmarilian (which is hard to read), Unfinished Tales, and a
few others to keep you in reading if you want more.

Maybe give the first movie a try, and if you like it... then switch to the
books.

Much prefer books to movies, Tom, but I've tried reading this before and
just can't get into it.

No, Howie. YOU are the regular name-caller, in this long and already
very dreary thread and others before it.

yippee. Hubby parallel squats 385 3 sets, 3 reps, 3x weekly and

You come to my house and lift/squat with Hubby's friends using phrases

Tell us about the very bad effects of second hand smoke, Chip. I
would like to have the full details of the studies. Your anecdotal
experiences with autopsies are meaningless. I want to see the hard
data.

I know what diseased lung tissue looks like. I also know what healthy lung
tissue looks like. I know what a long-time smokers lung tissue looks like,
and I know what a long-term second hand smoke inhaler's lung tissue looks
like. So no, it is not meaningless. Lung and lower respiratory disease is
forecasted by every major public health entity to become one of the top
three killers of man in the next 20 years.

There is no arguing, second-hand smoke is hazardous. Now to what degree,
and in comparison to what; that is up to you to decide on the hazard. If
you want clinical and peer reviewed data, here you go:

A number of government agencies can provide additional information
addressing the health risks of environmental tobacco smoke. These include:

Office on Smoking and Health/Centers for Disease Control
Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion
Mail Stop K-50, 4770 Buford Highway
Atlanta, GA 30341
1-800-CDC-1311

National Cancer Institute
Building 31, Room 10A24
Bethesda, MD 20892

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
Information Center
4733 Bethesda Avenue, Suite 530
Bethesda, MD 20814

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
4676 Columbia Parkway
Cincinnati, Ohio 45226-1998

Some studies have shown that living with a smoker (not sitting next to
one occasionally in a bar or casino), increases one's risk of lung
cancer by 14%. The very next question a sophisticated consumer of
this information should ask is "what is the base rate for lung cancer
among non-smokers." Let's say it is 2%, meaning that 2% of the
non-smoking population can expect to contract the disease during their
lifetime. Putting the above "facts" together tells you that a
non-smoker who lives with a smoker has a 2.3% chance of contracting
lung cancer in his/her lifetime. Thus, among 1000 non-smokers who do
not live with a smoker, 20 can be expected to contract lung cancer;
while among 1000 non-smokers living with a smoker, 23 can expect to
conract lung cancer. So, assuming statistical significance, which is
not the case in most studies, we can expect very heavy exposure to 2nd
hand smoke (e.g., living with a smoker) to increase the chance of lung
cancer by 3 in 1000 cases. So what do you suppose the data would look
like for folks who spend three weeks per year cruising on a ship?

Now we could do the same kind of research on the increased risk of
lung cancer that is involved when one moves from a rural to an urban
area. Or the increased risk for lung cancer among those who live in
California, as compared to the rest of the Nation. I bet the
statistics would be a lot more frightening than those for heavy
exposure to 2nd hand smoke (i.e., living with a smoker). So I guess
all those folks who choose to raise their kids in CA, or worse move
their kids to CA, are engaged in serious child abuse.

You are comparing apples to oranges. I am well aware of the fact that
living in Los Angeles will greatly increase your risk of lung disease,
verses living in Casper, Wyoming.
