Denmark
I think that was the thread name. Something weird happened to my
connection when I went to look at the Danish version of "castle" someone posted. However, I would not be surprised to find it's what I'd call a palace. There are some nice palaces in Scandinavia and other countries. Anyway, as a major castle fan whose definition of "castle" is quite UNAmerican, judging from what I see called a "castle" in this group, here's mine: medieval defensive structure built to keep the enemy OUTside such as the many Burgen, mostly Burgruine nowadays, found all over Germany. In Germany one also finds some that were later gradually converted into palaces, many palaces built as such when armies, rather than defensive walls, did most of the defending. Neuschwanstein is a palace, and a 19th-century one at that. The majority of my countrymen call it a castle. Hohenzollern looks like a castle, but is also a palace; only a small chapel is actually medieval. -- Mary Loomer Oliver (aka Erilar), philologist, biblioholic medievalist http://www.airstreamcomm.net/~erilarlo |
