Default flights through lax

can anyone tell me how to search for flights from new york to honolulu
THROUGH lax, seattle, or sf?

i've been looking at fares and there doesn't seem to be any easy
search filter for a stopover on the west coast.

Used to be that you could specify the stopover with the old
text-based Sabre system. Now, you may have to use one of
those sites which show a matrix of non-stop, 1-stop, 2-stop
fares under the various airlines, like www.orbitz.com or my
favorite, www.sidestep.com .

choose "multi-city" and fill in JFK-LAX-HNL, JFK-SFO-HNL, or JFK-SEA-HNL
(you'll have better luck through LAX or SFO as the few SEA-HNL flights tend
to leave in the early morning and there probably won't be an easy connection
from the east coast.

This can still be done with today's search engines. Go to itasoftware.com
and read the FAQ on how to specify an intermediate stop-over airport.

Another way is to Book a NY to West Coast Flight seperate from your
West Coast to Hawaii trip.
If you can stop at alternate West Coast Cities,
Aloha Airlines has Orange County, Oakland and San Diego.
They fly nonstop to Oahu Maui Kauai and the Big Island.
Aloha also flys from Vegas.
Hawaiian Flys from San Diego, LAX, SFO Portland and I think Seattle.

The WestCoast seems to have the most sale fares to and from Hawaii.
I've seen and Purchased (a few times ) 99 dollar each way Nonstop
flights.
It seems 129-199 is a pretty good special and pretty easy to secure on
off peak times.

Booking in this manner is usually more expensive.
