Boeing's new 787 'delayed' yet again

Boeing's new 787 'delayed' yet again By Russell Hotten, Industry Editor Last Updated: 11:58pm GMT 07/03/2008 Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner faces further delays amid claims that the US company continues to underestimate the amount of work left to do on the new-generation aircraft. # The latest news from the transport and automotive industries The company said last night that it was reassessing the production schedule but would not comment on a Goldman Sachs report that the 787 could be delayed by several months. A 787 Dreamliner being assembled: Boeing's new 787 'delayed' yet again Delivery of the 787 Dreamliner has been delayed twice already The Boeing aircraft, while notching up a massive 857 orders from 56 airlines, has been delayed twice already. The worry for Boeing's investors is that the company may have to renegotiate contracts and pay compensation to airlines, as happened with Airbus's long-delayed A380 super-jumbo. Yesterday, Goldman analyst Richard Safran wrote to clients that continuing production problems mean deliveries may not start until the third quarter of 2009, not "early next year" as Boeing planned. Originally, Boeing said it would begin test-flying the 787 in September last year, with first deliveries to All Nippon Airways this May. Mr Safran said sources had told him that "changes to the airplane have caused a delay in completing wiring of the aircraft". Previous delays were caused by unfinished parts from suppliers. Mr Safran said: "In our view, Boeing continues to underestimate the amount of work required on the 787." advertisement A Boeing spokeswoman said the company is "working hard to meet milestones" and will not comment on the Goldman projections. "That [production schedule] assessment is ongoing. We will communicate to customers on this around the end of the first quarter," she said. Boeing's shares fell more than 3pc yesterday, and have fallen 11pc in the past 12 months. The shares had already been under pressure this week after Boeing lost out to rival EADS for a $40bn (£20bn) contract to supply the US military with mid-air refuelling aircraft. |
