Indeed. It doesn't happen by accident, and it's their fault they did not
transfer or backup the old iTunes data (it sounds like).

It WAS migrated by someone much more capable than I, but I did something
wrong on the backup attempt.

The point is someone (you or your "more capable" helper) caused your
data to be erased from the iPad by answering "yes" to the question "This
will delete all data from your iPad. Are you sure?" It's not something
that just happens on its own.

obviously this person was incapable, since it did not work properly.

You should be able to restore your iOS device from the automatic
backups, using iTunes. Please note, your iPad must be physically
plugged into the computer, from which you are attempting to perform the
restore.

In iTunes on your computer, using the full size window, select you iOS
device, displayed the the top of the window. It's going to be a small
icon, just to the right of the icons for music, videos, etc. In the
Summary, there's an option to restore your iOS device, where you want
to click Restore Backup.

If your backups exist in your iCloud account, your documents, music
and photos will not be restored, as only basic things like system
files and preferences are being backed up remotely. If you've been
backing up your iOS device to your computer, everything should be
restored, including your documents, music, photos, apps and the like.

See
https://help.apple.com/itunes/mac/12.1/index.html?localePath=en.lproj#/itns3280

If worse comes to worse, you may be able to restore you iPad, using
iTunes on your old Mac, then performing whatever updates need to be
made so that it will cooperate with OS X 10.10.x.

If, on the other hand, you haven't backed up your device, you're going
to have to start from scratch.

While I hadn't noticed earlier, iOS 8.3 update is available. It
includes security updates. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222

Please note, not one of your self inflicted issues has anything to do
with running OS X 10.10.x. PEBCAK.
