Default Dulles and National Airports set Record Number of Pax in 2004

Dulles had a record number of passengers in 2004,
a total of 23 million arrival plus departure pax.
National had around 16 million, possibly exceeding
the current record of 16.3 million set in 1993.

But why does National seem to have little
difficulty handling 2/3-rds as many pax as Dulles,
yet with only one main runway, not three, and no
planes larger than 757/A321? One answer could be
that National's traffic is pretty evenly spread
throughout the day, while Dulles has a big peak in
international traffic in the late afternoon /
evening. The hundreds of Independence Air flights
at Dulles with only a few pax on each can't help.

Clearly you're not from DC. Why use two or three words when one will do,
and I liked Reagan. Sort like calling EWR by its new name when all you have
to do is say Newark.

Congressman Barr from Georgia held the Metropolitan Washington
Airports
Authority hostage until they added "Reagan" to the airport's name.

His tactic was to put a hold on replacement members to the Authority,
which
left them without a quorum. Thus they couldn't borrow the money
needed
for expansion at Dulles. Work was about to grind to a halt.
