Getting to Manchester airport early
Two friends and I will be in Liverpool on June 14th for a show that
starts until 8:00pm. The show is at the Liverpool Echo Arena. I am guessing the show won't end until at least 11:00. My friends and I intend to home to Philadelphia on June 15th, which is a Monday. They will be leaving from Liverpool's airport. Due to my need to use my USAirways frequent flyer miles, I have to leave from Manchester. None of us will have a rental car, but I see that Manchester and Liverpool are only 50 minutes apart by train. Is it practical for me to book a flight home from Machester at 9:00am on the 15th? Either way, the flight departs at 9:00am. Will I be able to travel via train from Liverpool to the Manchester airport in time to catch my flight if I book it for the 15th, or would I be better off spending the night in Manchester on the 15th and leaving from there on the 16th? I looked at the Britrail web site and I see there are four trains leaving between Liverpool and Manchester per day, but I don't see where on their web site it says when the first train from Liverpool leaves, nor do I see what's involved with getting from the train station in Manchester to the airport. My travel plans are flexible, but its its not unrealistic, I would prefer to go home on the 15th rather than the 16th. If anyone has any suggestions on how I should handle this, please let me know. Thanks, Stan |

I don't know what the 'Britrail' web site says, but it's completely wrong that there are four trains per day- maybe you meant per hour, which is about right? Suffice it to say, staying in Liverpool on the evening of the 14th, and getting an early train the next morning is perfectly possible. Check www.nationalrail.co.uk- you will see that there are even hourly direct trains between Liverpool and Manchester Airport itself- I reckon that the 0513 departure would suit you best- the 0613 would maybe cut it too fine (for my comfort anyway.) -- (*) of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate www.davidhorne.net (email address on website) "The fact is that when I compose I never think of and never have thought of meeting the listener." -George Perle (RIP 2009) |

Awesome! Thank you! Well, awesome unless you oversleep and miss the flight. You'll have about 6 hours to get from the concert to your hotel, get your bags ready, go to bed, sleep, get up, check out, get from the hotel to the train station, and buy a ticket. Even if you have a hotel near the station (it's called Lime Street station, by the way), I doubt you'll get much more than 4 hours' sleep, so you'll need to make very sure that you get up when you're supposed to. You'll also need to inform the hotel in advance that you'll be checking out before 5 am -- smaller places won't have anyone on the desk at that hour -- and if the hotel isn't near the station, arrange in advance for a taxi. Then you'll be on the train for about an hour. Best to keep your baggage and stuff where you can have your hands on it if you doze off during the ride. -- Mark Brader, Toronto "You are not the customer, you are the product." Yea stan youll make that -- you may have to swap trains at Manchester central to get the train to the airport -- your cutting it fine but cos ur traveling on a weekday the trains will be available early doors cos of the commuter traffic...
I should think youll make this personally -- but id leave plenty of time incase of a cancelation etc (this is British rail after all) -- if you are unsure you could try doing a http://www.thetrainline.com/default...._2009420114550 trainline search-- these guys offer cheaper tickets for advanced bookings and also map your journey times etc -- they are a help bunch o people! happy travels my man!! DCx Alternatively -- if your struggling -- try putting "www.google.co.uk/ncr" (this will keep you locked into google.CO.UK and thus only pull results relevant to the UK) Last edited by dietcola : April 20th, 2009 at 11:44 AM. |

I'd try it myself under the same circumstances. I was just pointing out that he'd need to think about it, and make arrangements accordingly. -- Mark Brader "One should never listen to oneself. Getting to Manchester airport early
Personally, if I was in the OPs shoes, I think I'd be looking to book
a hotel in Manchester, rather than Liverpool, the night before. At least that way if there are any logistical problems getting across to Manchester, they'll occur with plenty of time still in hand to rectify them. -- Travel forums - http://www.aardvarktravel.net/chat Add your travel site - http://www.aardvarktravel.net/addurl |

I had the same thought, but I looked up the train times and realized it was impossible. Remember that his concert is on a Sunday. After the 11:01 pm train, which he couldn't possibly catch, there isn't another one to Manchester until 3:38 am. -- Mark Brader, Toronto This is a signature antibody.
